Huskies beat Taft, fall to Scio, Toledo in girls hoops

The Huskies opened big against Toledo Friday night at home in girls varsity basketball, building a lead of 11-3, but Toledo took control of the game to win 36-28.

“We outscored them two of the four quarters,” said Coach Steve Brown. “We outscored them by seven points.”

After building a strong initial lead, “toward the end (of the first quarter), we kind of folded,” Brown said. Toledo added another six points to close the Huskies lead to 11-9.

Toledo went on a 9-1 run in the second quarter to lead 18-12 at halftime then held the Huskies to three points in the third quarter to build a 28-15. The Huskies didn’t have a field goal at all in the second quarter and just one in the third quarter.

The Huskies charged back in the fourth quarter, closing the lead by five point but not enough to take back the win.

Toledo sent the Huskies to the foul line seven times in the fourth, and the Huskies scored seven of 14 shots. Ally Tow scored five of those to lead Huskies scoring with 15 points and then fouled out.

The way the Huskies opened the game, “I was thrilled,” Brown said. “We were making some good plays, breaking the press. This was the best first seven minutes we’ve played all year. Hopefully that’s going to become the norm.”

Then the Huskies broke down, started turning over the ball and giving up steals.

Toledo got the ball and put up a few easy layups, Brown said.

Toledo dropped into a zone, and the Huskies didn’t cope well with it, he said.

The Huskies, 2-3, are scheduled to play at Estacada Thursday and host Cascade Friday.
