Sweet Home 14, Willamette 2
The Husky softball team defeated Willamette 14-2 in five innings on the road Monday.
“We hit the ball real well,” Coach Steve Hummer said. “I was concerned that the long break would leave us a bit rusty, but the girls jumped on them early and really looked good.
“Idahna (Huenergardt) had a huge night. She has been sick, and tonight she looked like herself for the first time this year. She was 4-5 with a double and a solo home run into the wind.”
Adding two hits each were Jessalyn Seiber, Makenzie Marchbanks with a triple, Paige Niemi, and Becky Spencer. Lacey Mink and Sara Brocard each hit a double.
“Our seniors are providing great leadership, and it is beginning to really pay off,” Hummer said. “Some of the younger girls are starting to play with confidence and are really coming on.
“It was really nice to see (Kim )Bell pitch. She is already starting to show signs of being a solid pitcher, and I see her getting better and better.”
Marchbanks pitched two innings with five strikeouts. Bell recorded the win pitching three innings with two strikeouts.
The Huskies host the ninth-ranked North Marion Huskies on Wednesday and the second-ranked Newport Cubs on Friday.
