Sweet Home’s track and field squad got its first big test of the season Saturday at the Meet of Champions and the Huskies passed, according to Coach Billy Snow.
Although the season has been slightly abbreviated, with the home meet against Sisters and La Pine snowed out two weeks ago, Snow said he believes most of the Sweet Home athletes who should have qualified for the meet, held at Willamette University’s stadium in Salem, did.
“We had some kids who were kind of on the bubble and if we’d had a few more meets they might have qualified, but it was probably the same thing for the other schools,” he said. “The kids that went had a good day.”
The big performances of the day for Sweet Home were the two short relays. The boys team of Alex Coakley, Chris Carpenter, Nick Hall and Alex Santana, set a new school record of 43.50, breaking the mark of 43.54 set in 1970 by Randy Westrick, John Johnson, D. Landis and Dale Groshong.
“We knew they were running fast, and I thought they might run in the low 44s or high 43s, but to run what they ran there – that record had stood since the 1970s,” Snow said.
On the girls side, Sweet Home won also, with Maria Kropf anchoring them to a close victory over Philomath despite a slight injury sustained during the race.
“Maria goes half-speed with a strain and they still run 50.70,” Snow said. “I think the girls would have been in the 49s easy if Maria hadn’t had that little twinge there. They were rolling.”
He said Annie Whitfield, in particular, showed improvement over last year, running the curve with authority and handing off to Kropf nearly head-to-head with Philomath, whereas last year Kropf started from behind at the district and state meet against the Warriors.
The momentum carried over into the sprints, in which Santana, Carpenter and Coakley all finished under 12 seconds in the 100 and Jessika Stewart cut 15/100ths of a second off her season-best time and freshman Courtney Kent lowered her 400 PR by a second.
Whitfield also had a good day in the javelin competition, winning the event with a throw of 126-8, well below her season best but enough to get the job done.
That was it for Sweet Home, win-wise, but the Huskies were still in the thick of it.
Despite what Snow called a “terrible” start in the boys 300 hurdles and hitting at least two hurdles in the race, Hall still managed a second-place finish in the event.
Zach Jackson was second in the boys javelin (172-11) and Patrick Long posted a 10-foot season PR, which was also his lifetime best, at 161-4 to place seventh.
Jake Johnson took second in the discus, upping his lifetime best by eight more feet as he threw 140-10, improving his personal best by more than 20 feet thus far since the beginning of the season Snow noted.
In the distances, Olivia Johnson was second in the 3000 in a personal best of 11.07.82 and Daniel Danforth cut another 10 seconds off his lifetime best in the boys event, running a gutsy 9:32.44 to finish eighth in a field of 22 runners loaded with veterans.
“We just had a great day,” Snow said. “Other than Joe Stroud in the 800, who was injured and sick, everybody had at least a season PR. Some were pretty significant too. We didn’t try to taper them at all for this.”
The Huskies competed at Sisters Tuesday, April 12, on a day in which the wind became an increasing factor. Snow said the highlights were Santana’s 22.8 in a slow heat of the 200 and Harvir Grewal’s 10-6 pole vault, a 1-1/2-foot PR. On the girls side, freshman Nicole Rasmussen ran 11:56.00 to win the 3000, breaking 12 minutes for the first time. She then ran 11:24.80 at the Meet of Champions.
The Huskies will be back in action at home Thursday against Junction City and Cottage Grove. Field action starts at 4 p.m., with track events at 4:30 p.m.
