Huskies come through with some big PR’s on track, field

Sweet Home’s boys placed third Friday, May 2, in a nine-team field at the Rob Allen Twilight Invitational track and field meet as the Huskies turned in a host of personal bests, some massive.

“We had a really good meet,” Coach Billy Snow said. “I counted up our 25 opportunities and we had 16 PRs on the boys side. They had a good day. Any time you get over 50 percent, you’re moving along pretty good. The girls were right at 50 percent.”

Jakob Hiett came within a second of breaking the school record in the 800, running 1:56.66, and Nicole Rasmussen won the 1500 in a personal-best 5:00.01, outsprinting Bend’s Sarah Perkins and East Linn Christian freshman Sydney Nichol to the finish line. Nichol, who is from Sweet Home, later won the 800 in 2:26.78, a lifetime best.

“Nicole got competitive and decided ‘not to let these people beat me,’” Snow siad. “It was good she had Sydney next to her because they pushed each other there at the end.”

Another huge PR came from Kayleen Keeney, who cut 45 seconds off her previous best in the 3000 to finish in 12:05.96.

“Kayleen just got into that race,” Snow said. “It hurt but she hung on.”

In the field, Brycen Mitten had personal bests in the shot (45-4) and the javelin (153-7) – his first time over 150 in the latter and a seven-foot PR.

“That javelin is going to be tight on the boys side at districts,” Snow predicted. “There’s a whole group of them and nobody has separated himself from the pack. You could throw your PR and finish out of the money or you could throw 5 feet under your PR and win the whole thing.”

In the long jump, Egan Shamek and Spencer Knight both exceeded 20 feet for the first time ever, posting big PR’s.

“Egan and Spencer had a great long jump competition,” Snow said. “That is pretty heady territory.”

Also, triple jumper Tucker Porter, a freshman, posted a 2-foot PR in that event, finishing 37-5.

The Huskies will wind up their pre-district campaign Wednesday, May 7, with a the Sweet Home Last Chance Meet at home, starting at 4 p.m., against some smaller schools: Harrisburg, Monroe, Pleasant Hill, Salem Academy, Triangle Lake and Willamina. Districts will begin May 15 at Elmira, with most finals on May 17.
