Huskies dominate Panthers at The Pit

In the seesaw battle of the night, Kyle Temple scored an overtime fall over D. Rardin of Central as the Huskies dominated their Capital Conference foes 55-13 at the Panther Pit.

Temple and Rardin covered the mat several times in a high-energy joust that saw Rardin lead 2-1 after the first period and 6-3 going into the third round.

“Kyle is doing a lot of things well right now,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “He won that match by out conditioning Rardin, who is a very good wrestler.”

Coach Thorpe said Temple, a 140 pound junior, works out with a cadre of tough wrestlers in the Husky practice room.

“He’s in that mid-weight range where he doesn’t have a choice. You either get tougher or you move to another group. It’s just like real life,” Coach Thorpe said.

Coach Thorpe said other quality matches of the night came from senior Matt Vassar at 189, who beat Tyler Chaney 2-1 and Logan Cooley at 275, although he lost 10-0.

Chad Emmert had a tough loss at 130 pounds, to a talented Nathan Garcia 2-1.

“There was a lot of stalling time that wasn’t called,” Coach Thorpe said. “I’m glad we only had one match-up last week. We are on the tail end of the flu and are getting healthy.”

Calendar: Sweet Home will host the Cascade Cougars Thursday. It is senior night and the Mat Club will also be recognized.

Central Linn’s varsity will compete against the Husky second varsity at 6 p.m. with Sweet Home vs. Cascade following.

Cascade is expected to field four or five tough wrestlers.

“They are a well-coached team under Tom Phillips,” Coach Thorpe said.
