Sweet Home’s golfers got to play at home for the one and only time this season Tuesday, April 21, in a scramble-format tournament in which golfers paired up with teammates and played the best ball on each stroke.
The Huskies finished fifth out of nine teams. Oakridge placed first, ahead of Cottage Grove.
“The highlight of the tournament was hole No. 17 in which Brenner Roberts and Ty Plebuch eagled the hole,” Coach Pat Davis said. “Brenner had a nice drive and Ty hit it in from about 180 yards or so.”
Brenner and Plebuch finished with an 82. Dawson Guzman and Alex Rice shot 87, and Devin Larson actually finished with the lowest score of all, a 79, after teaming up with a Cottage Grove player because both teams were short a player.
“Because we’re starting to get close to district, we do the scramble every year and the teams love to do it,” Davis said.
Friday, April 24, the Huskies played at Elk Grove in Sutherlin – “a tough, tough, tough course,” Davis said. “The winning score there was in the 370s. Usually something in the range of high 330s to 350 wins. That tells you what it was like for everybody.”
He did not report Sweet Home’s score.
Monday, April 27, Sweet Home played at Glaze Meadow in Black Butte in a 12-team field, including several 5A squads.
The Huskies finished seventh, shooting 424.
“We want that number to be down around 400,” Davis said. The course was not forgiving to golfers who failed to hit the middle of the fairways, he noted.
Roberts led the team with 92, Plebuch shot 106, and Guzman and Larsen shot 113.
The varsity will play May 5 at the Robinson Memorial at Tokatee, while the JV and girls will play at Middlefield in Cottage Grove on Wednesday, April 29, and Fiddler’s Green in Junction City on Friday, May 1.
