Philomath defeated the Husky boys soccer team 7-2 on Thursday in Sweet Home.
“We gave up some easy goals on some corner kicks,” Coach Al Grove said. “As a team, we’ve got to be more aggressive going for the ball.”
The ball bounced around too much near the goal on those corner kicks, giving the Warriors too many chances to score, he said. The team needs to improve communication between the goalie and defenders there.
“Defensively, as a team, we’re allowing too many points,” he said. Offensively, the Huskies are putting the ball in the net, but it’s not getting the opportunities it needs. Against Philomath, the Huskies took fewer shorts.
After trailing 3-0 at halftime, Alex Santana assisted Matt Grove for a goal about one and half minutes into the second half. Brock Crocker assisted Grove for a shot in the middle of the half, but Philomath scored on a corner kick and two penalty kicks to build an insurmountable lead.
The game was pretty even on the field, Grove said, but “you can’t let up on a corner kick.”
