Huskies fall to Cottage Grove, Elmira in boys soccer outings

Elmira 3, Sweet Home 0

One red card, and the Huskies were down a man Thursday at home, giving Elmira an advantage and the chance to score and win 3-0.

“It was a pretty good game,” said Coach Ryan Regrutto. “I think we were competitive.”

It was 0-0 at halftime, he said. The Huskies were strong in the first part of the second half.

“We actually had the ball down on their half a good 15 minutes,” he said. Patric Dishaw chased a Falcon a long way and then used a slide tackle to stop a shot. Unfortunately, as last defender, he inadvertently hit the player and drew a red card, something that would’ve been a yellow card elsewhere on the field.

Dishaw left the field, and Elmira scored the penalty kick.

The Huskies kept trying to make an offensive play, Regrutto said, but Elmira scored a couple more times on the counterattack.

“I think it was a very competitive game,” he said, but Elmira was able to take that extra-man advantage to the goal.

Cottage Grove “was a really rough game for us,” Regrutto said. The Huskies were playing on turf, where the ball moves quicker; and it was a wet, soggy and cold night.

At the same time, Cottage Grove is a good team, with good, technical players, he said.

Most of the first half, the score was 0-0, and the Huskies had their time on the Cottage Grove end.

In about the last 15 minutes of the first half, Cottage Grove scored three goals. The first 15 minutes of the second half, the Lions scored three more and then went silent on the scoring front.

“We’re still trying to figure out how to score goals and get guys forward,” Regrutto said. It’s a bit of a learning curve for a team that’s been defensive minded.

The guys are playing hard, holding possession and passing the ball around, he said. What they’re doing looks like good soccer, and they’re competitive.

“I was really impressed by what they were able to run,” he said.

Matt Davis had some good saves, Regrutto said, but he slipped and hit his head. The coaches and referee checked on him during the game and let him keep playing, but he wasn’t able to play Thursday against Elmira.

He was covered by Adrian Zavala, up from the junior varsity, Regrutto said. “He did an excellent job, made some good saves and kept us in it.”

The Huskies were scheduled to play at Junction City on Tuesday and host Sisters Thursday.
