Huskies fall to Philomath, No. 1 Newport, but get two wins

Philomath defeated the Huskies 14-0 at home in six innings Monday night.

“We gave up a ton of hits tonight,” Coach Dan Tow said. “Our defense actually made some good plays, but they just ripped our pitching tonight, and we couldn’t get much to go our way.”

Adam Hummer was starting pitcher for the Huskies and is credited the loss. Greg Sipe and Robby Wallace pitched in relief.

Steeves was the starting and winning pitcher for Philomath.

At bat, Kyle Pettit, Chaz Davis and Sipe all hit singles.

Gunter hit a grand slam homerun for Philomath.

Sweet Home 7, Central 3

The Huskies defeated Central 7-3 at Independence on March 27.

“We came right out hitting the ball tonight, and we really hit up and down our lineup,” Coach Dan Tow said. “Kyle Pettit had a big night on offense and defense, and Adam Hummer really hit the ball well. Adam’s homerun was a big hit. It gave us a five-run cushion at the time.

“We did a good job of generating runs tonight, and we did it a lot of different ways. This was a good win for us.”

On the mound, winning pitcher Kyle Pettit had 10 strikeouts and gave up only two walks.

Hamilton started for Central and was the losing pitcher. Brazile pitched in relief.

At bat, Pettit went 3-4. Hummer went 2-3 with a two-run homerun and double. Brad Valloni went 1-1 with two RBIs. Greg Sipe hit a double, and Skyler Bascom had an RBI.

Sweet Home 8, Willamette JV 1

The Huskies defeated 5A Willamette High School’s junior varsity 8-1 on April 26 at home.

“Willamette (Eugene) overbooked their game schedule,” Tow said. “So we played their JV team.

“Our kids did a nice job defensively, and Robby Wallace pitched five very good innings.

“We got two home runs and several doubles, and that made the difference.

“Both teams did a nice job on defense, and it was a pretty well-played ball game.”

At the plate, Pettit went 2-4 with a homerun and a double. Adam Matuszak went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. Chaz Davis hit a double with three RBIs. Ray Lingenfelter went 1-2. Hummer went 1-2 with a solo home run.

Winning pitcher Wallace recorded seven strikeouts and one walk. He was relieved by Greg Sipe in the sixth. Cannazzaro was the losing pitcher.

Newport 8, Sweet Home 0

The Huskies started the week out losing to top-ranked Newport 8-0 on April 24 at home.

“Newport has a tough team, and we just couldn’t generate much offense,” Tow said. “I thought our kids competed pretty well. We just didn’t get many hits, and they got several big hits.

“We had two innings that hurt us. Otherwise, our kids competed hard and played pretty well. That’s all I can ask.”

Losing pitcher Hummer started for the Huskies. Sipe and Wallace pitched in relief.

Crowe started for Newport and recorded the win. Iverson pitched in relief.

At bat, Tyler Horner went 1-2 with a double. Matuszak went 1-2. Bascom went 1-3.

For Newport, Logan Horrocks hit two homeruns, and Tyler Conklin hit one home run.
