Huskies finish third in Oregon Classic wrestling tourney

Sweet Home’s wrestlers finished third in the Oregon Classic tournament Friday and Saturday at Redmond.

The Huskies lost just one match in the dual meet-style event, dropping a 41-26 match score to top-seeded and number one-ranked Tillamook.

Along the way Sweet Home beat beat fourth-seeded Ontario 58-12 and third-seeded Scappoose 39-31 before topping Phoenix 34-29 for third place. Illinois Valley lost to Tillamook in the final 42-25.

“That’s the toughest dual meet tournament you can wrestle in,” said Sweet Home Coach Steve Thorpe. “We just wrestled and we wrestled very hard.”

Despite not repeating as tournament champion, Thorpe was delighted with the Huskies’ finish, particularly given the team’s youth and the fact that many are injured and a number were called upon to move up a weight.

“This weekend the guys were just totally unselfish,” he said.

Those who moved up included Kris Newport, Casey Johnson, Jack Perry, Nick Pitts and Brad Pitts, Thorpe said.

“It was pretty incredible on their part to jump up weights,” he said.

Thorpe said sophomore Mitch Grove at 103 and Newport, a freshman who normally wrestles at 125 pounds, turned in outstanding performances.

“Kris Newport, this freshman, he believes he can wrestle with anybody in the state,” Thorpe said. “Twice he was put into situations where he had to win for us to win the dual, against Scappoose and Phoenix. I bump him up to 130 (against Tillamook) and he beats the No. 4–ranked wrestler in the state, a returning state placewinner, a senior, at 130 – over his normal weight.”

He predicted that the Huskies’ conditioning and their tough schedule will pay off in a month.

“I’ll tell you, when you put yourself in tougher tournaments, you create and opportunity for yourself to get better,” Thorpe said.

“I’m very, very proud of how our guys competed, how they conducted themselves. I’m very excited about what’s coming up in February.”

The Huskies, now 18-2 on the season in dual meets, will host Taft at home Thursday, Jan. 17, at 6 p.m. in a Val-Co League match. Culver, the No. 1-ranked 2A team in the state and winner of the 2A division in the Oregon Classic, will also compete in a dual against the Huskies. Culver beat Sweet Home last year, before the Huskies made their run to the state tournament.
