Huskies get revenge over Cubs on home diamond

Sweet Home 3, Newport 2

The Huskies defeated Newport 3-2 in an eight-inning rematch on March 22 at home.

“It was a huge, huge, huge win for us,” said Coach Matt Matuszak. “I can’t even describe how big a win that is for our program.”

It was one of the ideal confidence-building games and the last game before league play was scheduled to start this week.

Matuszak said he is feeling really well about the team, but it still has a lot to work on.

Pitching has been phenomenal, he said, and the Huskies were getting the bats going with nine hits on the game.

Newport defeated Sweet Home 12-6 two weeks ago, but the Huskies performed much better.

“Our pitchers threw strikes,” Matuszak said.”And we made plays defensively. We played catch basically.”

The Huskies have been working on the fundamentals, but that’s been difficult with the rainy weather, Matuszak said. That’s a disadvantage for all the teams, but when the ground is soggy, it makes for sloppy baseball.

Last week, Newport scored two runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead, but Kyle Winslow hit a big two-out, two-RBI shot in the sixth inning to tie, scoring Jonathon Wyatt and Gavin Kauffman.

Cory Hanks hit a single to score Jeremy White and win the game in the eighth inning.

Pitching, Hanks started the game, pitching five strong innings, Matuszak said. He was relieved by Drayson Scott for two innings. Gavin Kaufffman pitched the final inning and was credited with the win.

On the mound, Hanks struck out two batters and walked three, giving up two hits and two runs. Scott struck out two batters. Kauffman struck out one.

At bats, Jeremy White went 2-3 with a run and one stolen base. Justin Rice went 2-4. Scott went 1-4 with a stolen base. Kauffman went 1-4. David Deggelman went 1-3. Hanks went 1-4 with an RBI. Winslow went 1-1 with two RBIs.

The Huskies were scheduled to host La Pine on Tuesday. They travel to Elmira on Friday and then on Tuesday they will host Sisters.
