Last week was an active one for Sweet Home’s more advanced track and field performers, as the Huskies competed at home Wednesday against Sisters and Sutherlin and then again on Saturday at the Meet of Champions.
The MOC, held at Willamette University, is a qualification-based competition that draws the top performers in the Willamette Valley from Divisions 4 through 1.
“We had a phenomenal meet,” Coach Allyson Bodenbach said. “We had a lot of big PR’s. The weather was really challenging. There was a big headwind and when you were running down that backstretch with that bear on your back, it only made it harder.”
The only winner for the Huskies Saturday was Bethany Gingerich in the 400, in which she ran a gutsy home stretch to finish four-hundredths of a second ahead of Cottage Grove’s Hannah Albrecht, in a personal-best 1:01.02.
Also winning events were Sydney Nichol and Austin Linville, both of Sweet Home, who compete for East Linn Christian Academy. Nichol, a junior, ran a personal-best 4:56.63 to win the 1500 and Linville, a senior, triple jumped 41-4½ to win.
Sweet Home got several significant personal bests out of Saturday’s competition and, with the state meet beginning to appear on the horizon, Huskies are beginning to position themselves on the state radar.
Junior Dana Hiett, who just took up the triple jump this year, posted a two-foot PR of 33-7¼ Saturday, which was good enough to move into fourth among 4A athletes in the state rankings. That effort earned her the Husky of the Week award.
“That was really, really nice to see,” Bodenbach said. “She works hard.”
Garrison Whitfield threw the javelin 179-9 for another PR and is also ranked fourth in the state. His best throw was just one in a series, all around 170, which was “fun to watch,” Bodenbach said.
In the shot, Josie Knight threw her third straight PR, finishing with 37-4 – a personal best by a foot and four inches. That effort put her three feet ahead of the nearest competitior in the Sky-Em Conference and sixth in the state rankings.
“That was a giant PR,” Bodenbach said. “She is finally getting up there.”
Another big effort came from freshman Kate Hawken in the 400, a second-and-a-half PR of 1:03.87.
“53 seconds for a freshman is pretty darn good,” Bodenbach said.
Trey Reed broke 52 seconds in the boys 400 to finish second in 50.98 – not his lifetime best, but his fastest time of the season.
The Huskies will put their top varsity performers on the field Friday, April 29, at the Rob Allen Twilight Invitational at Lebanon beginning at 4:30 p.m. The field there will consist of mostly 5A schools, along with Newport.
Sweet Home will host a JV Invitational Wednesday, May 4, which will include 11 teams, including Sky-Em and Oregon West members.
Against Sisters and Sutherlin, winners for Sweet Home were Reed in the 200 (23:86) and the 400 (51.83), Jacob Erickson in the high jump (5-6) and TJ Baham in the pole vault (12-0).
For the girls, Kate Hawken won the 400 (1:05.36) and Gingerich the 800 (2:36.99) and Knight the shot (36-0).
Another big performer for the Huskies was Shania Baxter, who threw the javelin 104-8 for a 17-foot PR to break 100 for first time and place second. She also had an 11-foot PR in the discus (80-0).
Her javelin effort, if it had come earlier than Wednesday, would be have been good enough to qualify Baxter for the Meet of Champions, Bodenbach noted.
