Huskies lose 3, then come back against S. Albany for first win

Sweet Home 5, South Albany 4

The Husky baseball team won an eight-inning game 5-4 on a wild pitch against South Albany at home on Saturday.

“We put together a pretty good defensive game compared to our first three games,” Coach Dan Tow said. “We made a few mistakes early but settled in and played some decent baseball.”

The Huskies led 2-1 after one inning. South Albany scored two runs in the second to lead 3-2 and then again in the fifth to stretch its lead to 4-2. The Huskies scored two runs in the fifth to tie the game.

“In the eighth, Greg Sipe drew a leadoff walk, stole second and third and scored the winning run on a wild pitch, an exciting win,” Tow said.

Kyle Pettit went 2-4 at bats, hitting home runs on both and scoring two runs. Skyler Bascom went 1-2 with a double and two RBIs. Sipe went 2-3 with a double.

Adam Hummer was starting pitcher for the Huskies. Pettit pitched in relief and recorded the win.

Zach Ayers was starting pitcher for South Albany.

“We were shorthanded in our first outing, and it showed,” Tow said. “We committed a lot of errors and gave up a lot of unearned runs. An ugly game, but we’ve got to play to get better.”

The Huskies lost 13-3 in five innings at Cascade on March 12. They next lost at Elmira 10-0 in five innings on March 13 and then lost 14-5 hosting Junction City on March 15.

The Huskies were short three players, Kyle Pettit, Adam Hummer and Adam Matuszak, during their first three games for disciplinary reasons.
