Sweet Home’s wrestlers got a workout from Churchill on Wednesday, then returned to steamroll Junction City and Taft Thursday before the Huskies head out this week to Cascade and the Oregon Classic tournament.
The Huskies lost 41-30 to Churchill, the first time the Lancers have beaten Sweet Home in a dual meet in Coach Steve Thorpe’s years at the helm.
“I knew this was one of the better teams Churchill has had,” Thorpe said. “They had one kid, who moved in at 120 pounds, who was a returning state runner-up from Bend. I knew, coming in, that they would be very good.”
The Huskies wrestled well, he said, fighting off several would-be pins.
“That’s one of the highlights of the night, how hard guys fought. They refused to give up. I’m proud of that. You don’t have to win every match for me to be proud of you. We had some guys who competed.”
He specifically cited Aaron Blanchard, who spent most of his time on his back, bridging, in a 15-2 loss to Jorrin Ishihara at 113 pounds, but refused to allow himself to be pinned, and Tyrel Miller, who lost 16-5 at 120 pounds to that transfer from Bend, Jake Ayers.
“What a match,” Thorpe said of Miller’s effort. “We’re a young team but the kids aren’t acting like they’re young. They’re not quitting. They’re competing. Aaron Blanchard lost, but he saved team points by not giving up to a good wrestler.
“I’ll take guys competing like that. You can’t substitute that for anything. That’s hard-nosed wrestling.”
The Huskies rolled over Junction City 69-6, thanks in part to eight forfeits, and Taft 66-16, as the visitors forfeited seven weight classes.
“Junction City and Taft don’t have a lot of kids,” Thorpe said. “They don’t have a lot of numbers.”
Sweet Home heads to Cascade Wednesday, Jan. 15, for a 5:30 p.m. Face-off against the team that is most likely to give the Huskies a run for the district title. Then they go on the road to the Oregon Classic, one of the largest and most prestigious tournaments in the state, at the Redmond fairgrounds Friday and Saturday, Jan. 17-18.
Details will be available at oregonwrestle.com and updated results will be posted at TrackWrestling.com.
“We’ve opened league,” Thorpe said. “Now is the time that everything we do is very important. It’s about establishing yourself for what’s next – February.”
