Missing some of their top swimmers, the Sweet Home girls swim team still managed a second-place finish to Blanchet, which is the likely front-runner in this year’s district swim competition.
Meanwhile, the boys cruised to a six-point win over Blanchet in the first swim meet of the season, which also included Cascade, on Friday, Nov. 30.
“I was kind of surprised we swam as well as a team as we did,” Coach Doug Peargin said. “We started doubles this week. Usually we’re pretty tired for our first meet.”
The boys finished with 116 points to Blanchet’s 110 and Cascade’s 74. On the girls side, Blanchet scored 154, followed by Sweet Home (90) and Cascade (41).
“We were missing three girls who would really have helped,” Peargin said.
Freshman Esther Gunselman, in her first high school meet, delivered four lifetime bests for the girls, winning the 50 backstroke and placing second in the 200 freestyle.
“She was fired up,” Peargin said. “Usually we don’t start hitting lifetime bests until after Christmas Break.”
For the boys, Justin Hilburn was a winner in all four of his events – two individual and two relays.
Besides Hilburn in the 100 IM (1:07.3) and the 100 freestyle (58.5), the Huskies’ other individual winner was Victor Stupin in the 500 freestyle (5:57.6).
The Huskies will be back in action Thursday, Dec. 6, hosting Stayton.
