Sweet Home’s track and field athletes got a warm-up Thursday, March 20, that wasn’t very warm.
The Huskies held an intrasquad meet to give newcomers a chance to experience a track meet and basically get them conditioned to competing in less-than-ideal conditions, Coach Nathan Whitfield said.
The weather was cold and very wet. The meet included no relays, and distance and hurdles events were over shorter distances than normal.
“The kids did pretty well,” Whitfield said. “Conditions weren’t the best. They’re getting used to competing in that and that’s part of what we’re trying to accomplish.”
There were some personal bests: Junior McKenzie Miller won the girls 1200 in 4:10, eight seconds faster than her time in that event last year.
Senior Jack Simmons won the javelin with a throw of 132-10, a 4½-foot improvement over his best effort last year, his first in high school track, in which he placed seventh at districts.
Sophomore Gavin Tyler won the shot put with a throw of 45-5, nearly a foot further than his best last year at the district championships, in which he placed third.
Junior Dillan Davis opened his season with a two-hundredths of a second PR in the 100, running 12.36 behind senior Chase Cameron.
Freshmen won several events: For the boys, Sam Barringer was the top finisher in the triple jump (36-1) and the high jump (5-2), in which he tied with junior Elisha Scofield, and Mason Tyler won the long jump (16-2½). Grace Gardner won the 200 hurdles in 36.71 for the girls.
“We had some good initial marks from some of the freshmen,” Whitfield said.
The Huskies will be back on the track, with Stayton, at Woodburn Wednesday, April 2, then will compete April 9 at Cascade.
