Cascade 5
The Husky baseball team edged out a persistent Cascade 8-5 at home on Thursday.
“This game was really back and forth until Bryce Beard broke it open with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning,” Coach Dan Tow said. “Bryce got us going little in the fifth with a lead-off double and eventually scored on a Joe Rosa single.
“Brandon Martin got hit by a pitch in the same inning and scored on a Tyler Emmert single.
“In the sixth, with the score tied 5-5, Chris Phillips led off with a single and was bunted to second by Brent Smith. Carey Hintze drew a walk and then Bryce hit the game winner.
“Brent Smith gave us a gutsy five innings. Donny Cliver threw the sixth, and then Beard pitched in the seventh, retiring Cascade’s three batters on a strikeout and two ground outs.
“This comleted a very good week for us winning three games in three consecutive days. We had different guys come through for us on each night, and we really pulled out some tough victories.
“Bryce finished all three games on the mound and absolutely had a great week for us.
“Our kids showed a lot of character in each game, and their never-say-die attitude really paid off.”
Beard went 3-4 with a double and the three-run home rune. Phillips went 3-4 with an RBI. Emmert went 2-3 with an RBI. Rose went 1-2 with an RBI.

Molalla 2
The Huskies defeated Molalla 4-2 at Molalla on April 30.
“Cody Miller did a great job for us tonight,” Coach Tow said. “He gave us four excellent innings on the mound scattering five hits and giving up only one earned run. He also helped himself with a hit and a run in the third inning.
“Bryce Beard came in and threw the last three innings and did not give up a hit and held them scoreless.
“This was really a defensive game with great pitching by both teams.
“Molalla’s kid, Berdejo, was very good striking out five and walking none.
“One of the big plays for us came in the fourth inning when Molalla had runners on second and third with no outs. The batter hit a line drive (toward third), which Joe Rosa caught and stepped on his bag for a double play. That was a big play in the game and kept them from scoring any runs in that inning.”
At bats, Phillips went 2-3 with one run. Cody Miller went 1-2 with one run scored. Beard, T. Smith and Martin each went 1-3. Travis Mead had a double for Molalla.
On the mound, winning pitcher Miller struck out three and walked two. Berdejo struck out five Sweet Home batters and walked none.

North Marion 2
The Huskies defeated North Marion 3-2 at home on April 29.
“Donny Cliver did a great job for us tonight on the mound,” Coach Dan Tow said. “He scattered five hits and only gave up two runs. Bryce (Beard) came in and got the save by throwing the seventh inning.
“We were fortunate to get out of the seventh without them scoring. Their first two batters got on, and they were on second and third with no outs. Their next batter hit a ground ball to second, and Lance Carter threw the man from third out at the plate; then the hitter tried to go to second, and we had a late throw. On the same play, the man had gone from second to third, and he tried to score. Lance threw him out at the plate on the same play. Their next hitter grounded out to second to end the game.
“Basically, this was a pitchers’ duel from start to finish. We had a couple of chances to break it open, but we couldn’t get the big hits with the bases loaded.
“In the end, Lance’s home run in the fourth turned out to be the winning run. It was just a tight game, and our kids did a nice job getting the win.”
At bats, Carter went 1-3 with a solo home run. Beard went 2-3 with an RBI. Brent Smith went 1-2. Chris Phillips went 1-3. Brandon Martin went 1-3 with an RBI.
For North Marion, Nick Toney went 3-4, and Zach Tautfest hit a solo home run.
Cliver pitched seven strikeouts and three walks. For North Marion, Scott Jones struck out six and walked three.
