Huskies post PR’s at Meet of Champs

Sweet Home’s top track and field athletes came away from Saturday’s Meet of Champions at Willamette University with some personal bests and a taste of what the state meet will look like.

On the girls side, Coach Billy Snow noted that Ashley Danielson set a three-second personal record in the 800 and also launched a javelin throw of 108-06 – eight feet over her personal best and one of a series of four throws over 100 feet she recorded.

Jill Mahler helped the 4×400 relay team to a 10th place finish when she turned in a 66-second lap – after running 70s and 71s thus far.

Cassandra Schumacher was disappointed in her fourth-place finish, Snow said, but still ran a respectable 11:31.90 after running 5 1/2 laps by herself, then getting nipped at the wire by freshman Denise Lumbreras.

The boys 4×100 relay team had a couple of bad handoffs but still managed a 46.58, while the 4×400 relay team, with its fastest quarter-miler, Land Florek, sitting out with an injury, managed a 3:41.68, only a couple of seconds off its best time of the season, with usual weightman Marc Callagan plugged in. Callagan came through with a 55-second lap to take the Huskies to 12th place in a fast field.

“We may have Marc start working out with the sprinters and have him practice the weight events as a sideline,” Snow said.

Jess Keys PR’d in the 1500 and the 3000, and Rob Callagan recorded a three-second PR in the 800.

Dakotah Keys “blasted” to a second-place finish in the high hurdles, Snow said, running 15.85, and also placed second in the javelin (163-11),

Nathan Whitfield turned in a solid performance in a talented shot put field, throwing 44-03 for ninth place out of 18.

Sweet Home hosted Central and Stayton Tuesday, May 1, and will travel to Cascade Monday, May 7, for the JV district meet.

Sweet Home vs Newport, Central

Sweet Home took on Central and Newport, the Cubs for the second time in a week, Tuesday, April 24, at Husky Field.

The Huskies won the boys competition with 68 points, to Newport’s 49 and Central’s 34. The Newport girls were dominant in the higher-scoring events, racking up 76.5 points to Central’s 41.5 and Sweet Home’s 31.

Snow noted that sophomore Josh Riggs showed some improvement in the discus, winning the JV competition with a throw of 105-08, which put him sixth overall in that event, ahead of some veteran teammates.

Freshman Dakotah Snow set a school freshman record with a 13-0 jump in the pole vault.

Snow also said the relay teams ran well with the exception of the boys 4×400 team, who, he said, were “tired at the end of the meet.”

The Huskies got a glimpse of what districts will look like in the throws, as their best finishes were third in the javelin and discus by Hannah McClaskey.

“That was the league right there,” Snow said of the Newport’s Krystle Forester, who won the discus, shot and javelin, and her teammate Whitney Line, who was second in the shot. Central’s Sara Cole was third in the shot and second in the discus, making it clear who McClaskey needs to beat to make it to state.
