It wasn’t a red-letter day for Husky track Thursday, April 23, as Sweet Home hosted Cottage Grove and Elmira in the second of its three home meets on this season’s schedule, and one of the wettest of the season.
“As a whole, the marks were down,” Coach Billy Snow said. “I think it had to do with the weather. We just haven’t had that kind of weather this year.”
The Huskies certainly looked a little out of synch at times as the rain came down, slipping and in at least one case, even falling during a javelin throw attempt.
But there were some high points. Sweet Home’s 4×400 boys relay team of Eric Flierl, Egan Shamek, Jakob Hiett and Trey Reed ran 3:35.8 to win and post the eighth-fastest time in the state this season.
The girls short relay team of Josie Knight, Sarah Dunkley, India Porter and Bethany Gingerich also won their race.
“We were encouraged,” Snow said. “We saw some good things. The kids pumped for some of those, and they should be.”
Winners for the boys were Hiett in the 1500 (4:09.96), freshman Ricky Yunke in the 3000 in a seven-second PR of 11:09.94, Andre Holmes in the shot (42-1½), Dillon Stutzman in the javelin (132-2) and Shamek in the long jump (18-9½).
For the girls, Knight won the 100 (13.76), Gingerich the 200 (27.51), Jordan Miller won the javelin (92-9), Dana Hiett tied for first in the pole vault (7-0), Natasha Rasmussen won the long jump (14-8¾) and India Porter won the triple jump (32-4).
Snow noted that that win capped a good day for Porter, who also posted a season’s best leg in the 4×400 relay (65.40).
He also noted that Allison Wickline set a 21-second personal best in the 1500 (6:42.78) and the “vaulters did well, considering the conditions.”
“Our high jumpers on the girls side both cleared 4-6 and would have cleared a higher height on those jumps,” he said.
Thursday, the junior varsity athletes will compete at the Cottage Grove JV Invitational, which will include 6A Division South Medford and South Umpqua and North Bend, all teams that the Huskies have not seen this year at the JV level.
“It will be good to have the JV kids be the focus,” Snow said.
The top two athletes in each event will compete Friday at Lebanon’s Rob Allen Twilight Invitational, which will include most of the larger high schools in Linn County, along with East Linn Christian and Central Linn, both powers at the 2A level. Field events kick off at 4:30, with track competition beginning at 5:45 p.m.
The Huskies’ last meet before the District competition on May 14 will be the Sweet Home Last Chance, in which the Huskies will host Cascade, Sutherlin and a host of smaller schools from the 2A and 1A divisions. Field events start at 4 p.m., with track competition beginning at 4:30.
