Sweet Home’s track meet at La Pine was largely forgettable, Coach Billy Snow said, but despite the lengthy trip and the fact that some of the Huskies’ top athletes were either not competing or held out of events by their coaches.
Still, Brycen Mitten produced a throw of 43-11 – a lifetime best of nearly five feet, in the shot put.
“We may have a second event for that boy,” said Coach Billy Snow of Mitten, who has also been consistently throwing the javelin in the 145-foot range.
Senior Ben Terry won the shot (46-8) and the discus (117-0), the latter a personal best by nine feet.
Sadie Gordon also was a winner in the discus, taking the girls competition with a throw of 101-0, the first time she has broken 100 feet, though she has been consistently in the 90-foot range in recent weeks.
Also winning for the girls were Haley Kent in the triple jump (33-0), Josie Knight in the shot (30-10¾) and Nicole Rasmussen in the 1500 (5:26.42).
Other winners for the Husky boys were Trey Reed in the 100 (11.94) and 200 (24.08), Ashton Stutzman in the high jump (5-8) and Egan Shamek in the triple jump (37-11¼).
The shorter-than-usual track season is rapidly moving along, Snow noted. The Huskies will travel to Elmira Thursday, April 24, then will compete in Lebanon Friday, May 2 in a meet that, due to a limit of two athletes per team per event, essentially will be a varsity competition, followed by a final home meet on the following Wednesday.
“Pretty much, our line-up will be set at that point,” Snow said. “That last meet at home is why we call it the “Last Chance.” It’s everybody’s last chance.”
