Huskies roll over improved Sisters

140 pounder Thomas Helfrich set the standard for quick pins Thursday night–just 15 seconds–as the Husky grapplers clobbered Sisters 61-12 on Sweet Home mats.

The win, while lopsided scoring wise, actually saw an improved set of Outlaw wrestlers take to the mats.

“They’ve definitely improved in the last couple years,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “The problem is they have five seniors, so next year they’ll have to reload.”

Helfrich’s win was over Logan Chandler.

Another big pin for the Huskies came from senior Brandon Martin. The 189 pounder has missed most of the season due to a hand injury suffered in the state football playoffs.

Martin reentered the Husky lineup and pinned Dustin Hammack in :50 to cheers from the home crowd.

“Brandon said it was his first pin of the season before a home crowd and his last, since it was senior night, our last home match of the year,” Coach Thorpe said.

Junior Colton Cooley had one of the more exciting matches of the night, a see-saw go-round with Cruz Keeton at 152 pounds.

Cooley won 10-9 but not before taking home fans on a wild ride. Cooley was down 6-4 at the end of the first round, and down 7-6 going into the final round. Cooley scored a takedown and a nearfall while Keeton scored two escape in the final two minutes for the Sweet Home win.

In the second matchup of the night, the Huskies battled the state’s No. 2 ranked team from Culver, winning 46-25.

“Culver has some tough guys,” Coach Thorpe said. “They are a well-coached team. They wrestled our JV guys first and then our varsity. They stayed the night in Sweet Home and then went on to another tournament Friday. They are a team wanting to do the right things.”

Sweet Home will end the regular season Thursday at Cascade, an always tough matchup for the Huskies.

“Cascade is strong,” Coach Thorpe said. “They have some tough guys at 119, 135, 171, 189 and heavyweight. It will be a matchup.”
