Huskies show speed in meet at Newport

Sweet Home got another taste of the Val-Co League track and field situation Thursday as the Huskies matched up with Philomath and Newport, along with Stayton, at Newport on a sunny, breezy afternoon.

Coach Billy Snow moved athletes around at this meet, trying to find the pieces that he needs to put together Sweet Home’s best effort at the district meet in mid-May.

“Each meet we’re learning a few things here,” he said. “We moved kids around, all over the place, to take a look at different things and try to fill some holes.”

The experimentation resulted in a long jump of 22-8 from sophomore Dakotah Keys that ranks third in the state 4A standings, and a time of 22.88 in the 200 (second in the state), an event Keys hadn’t run since seventh grade. Both resulted in wins for the Huskies.

Land Florek ran the 100 in 11.53, his first time in that event this year and good enough for second in the Val-Co list of best season marks, behind Newport’s Preston Dye, whom Florek beat Thursday.

“That was encouraging, with Land in the 100,” Snow said. “We’ll have to look at him in that event.”

The Sweet Home boys are simply looking “really, really good” in all of the sprints, he said.

“On the guys side, I was encouraged by what I saw,” he said. “This gives us more options as we look at Districts and beyond.”

Some other happy surprises came from Brinden Sanders, who is in his first year of track and, Thursday in his first time in the 300 intermediate hurdles, ran 46.92, the eighth-fastest time of the season.

“Brinden looked great,” Snow said. “He had no form, but between the hurdles he was the fastest out there.”

Despite missing Brandon Elliott and with Sam Macklin limited to one event, the 4×100 relay, the Huskies still placed second in that event and won the 4×400 relay in 3:37.05, matching the time they ran at Junction City with Keys in the lineup.

The Huskies also did not run Rob Callagan in the 800, where he would have been expected to win, Snow said.

Snow said the meet wasn’t scored, but his total showed Sweet Home’s boys trailing Philomath by some 15 points at the end of the meet.

“There’s work to be done,” he said. “If we falter anywhere, Philomath’s going to pick up the pieces.”

On the girls side, veteran Amanda Basham was ill and didn’t run, but freshman sprinter Maria Kropf was back. Kropf, who injured her hamstring in the Huskies’ first meet, ran the 4×100 relay and the 100 meters, though her leg was sore afterwards.

“Maria, being able to get through a couple of events, that was encouraging,” Snow said.

In the 4×100 relay, Kropf took the handoff for the anchor leg trailing Newport by some 10 yards and behind Stayton as well. She passed both runners on the home stretch to win by four-tenths of a second.

Other brights spots were freshman Sami Webb in the 400 meters (1:10.55 in her first time in the event) and sophomore Jill Mahler in the 800, in which she held off a challenge by Stayton’s Kelsey Hernandez to take second in 2:40.52, behind Philomath freshman Sierra Grunwald.

“Jill had a heck of a day,” Snow said, noting that Mahler also ran a 68.6 split in the 4×400 relay, Sweet Home’s fastest in the race.

Also, freshman Kaitlyn Keenon cleared two heights in her first attempt at the pole vault and looked good in her introduction to the 300 hurdles, finishing seventh against a veteran field in 57.11.

“Kaitlyn is going to help tremendously,” Snow said. The Huskies are still very thin in the girls hurdle races and the high jump.

Sweet Home will be back on the road at a three-way meet with Philomath at Central on Thursday at 4 p.m.
