Sweet Home 2, Philomath 1
A little luck mixed with a good team under pressure and you have another Sweet Home win.
The Huskies slipped by Philomath 2-1 Monday evening at Philomath.
“I really feel like we got away with one here,” Coach Steve Hummer said. “We collected only one hit but were able to score two runs. Sometimes you just don’t play real well and get a little luck.
“Tonight we played six strong innings of defense and then had a bit of a scare in the seventh inning. Good teams find a way to win even when they are not playing well, and we did that tonight.”
Sara Brocard had the Huskies’ only hit of the night, Hummer said. She stole second and moved to third on a fielder’s choice and then scored on a pass ball.
“In the seventh, they had the winning run at second and the tying run at third when Idahna (Huenergardt) tagged the potential tying run out at the plate,” Hummer said. ”The girls said it all after the game. They said we got away with one. Hopefully a close call is enough to teach us always to bring our best.”
Pitching, Makenzie Marchbanks struck out 15 batters.
Last Friday, Central defeated Newport, which clinched a state play-off game for the Huskies, Hummer said. “I think this game being meaningless to us contributed to our performance.”
The Huskies play at home Friday against Newport and then finish the league at Central.
“We want to create some momentum going into the state playoffs by winning two games against tough opponents,” Hummer said.

Sweet Home 13, Taft 0
The Huskies shut out Taft 13-0 in five innings on Friday.
“We really got on them early,” Hummer said. “They have been hit hard by injury and discipline issues, which has left them with a lot of JV players playing varsity.”
Brocard hit a homer in the first to get everything rolling. Lacey Mink collected two hits. Michelle Cliver went 3-3.
Marchbanks struck out 11 batters and walked none, giving up two hits.
