Huskies spice up season opener with personal bests

Sweet Home’s track team started its season with a non-scoring meet with Blanchet Catholic, Creswell and Monroe Friday, enjoying some spring weather and a lot of optimism and new experiences.

“I thought the kids had a good day,” said Head Coach Billy Snow. “We had about 70 kids in the meet and somewhere in the low 40s, that was their first high school meet.”

While the rookies tested the water, the veterans picked up where they left off last year, or better, in some cases.

Sophomore Jakob Hiett was a double winner, taking the 1500 (4:30.20) and the 3000 (9:59.71). Other winners for Sweet Home boys were Trever Olson in the 400 (55.76), Chace Hutchins in the 300 hurdles (45.89), both relays, Ben Terry in the shot (43-3), Christian Porter in the high jump (5-2), Nick Mattson in the pole vault (10-0) and Brycen Mitten in the triple jump (34-11).

For the girls, winners were Haley Kent in the 100 (13.71), India Porter in the 400 (1:03.24), Nicole Rasmussen in the 1500 (5:15.24), Courtney Kent in the 300 hurdles (52.19), both relay teams, and Hannah Mather in the pole vault (6-6).

The throwers, in particular, got off to a good start, with some big

personal bests. Terry, a junior, threw a 2 1/2-foot PR to win the shot

and Rose posted a new personal best in the javelin by a similar

distance.

Snow said he and his assistants mixed it up a bit for the first meet, particularly in the relays.

“We didn’t run anybody in the highs (hurdles) and we didn’t even try to

put our top four in the short relays,” he said. “We want the kids to be

prepared to step into any leg we ask them to. We’re looking to see who’s

best in the corners, who’s best in the straightaways. Right now, every

spot is open.”

He said he was pleased with the distance runners, who were “running tired.”

“If they can run that kind of times off that particular workload,

they’ll drop their times when they rest up for a big meet. That’s good.”

The Huskies will get a bigger test Thursday, March 21,
