Huskies split first week of league on diamond

The Huskies won their league opener 14-4 in baseball at home against La Pine on March 30 but facing a tough pitcher, lost their second 9-1 at Elmira on Friday.

In between, the Huskies defeated Harrisburg 6-0 on Thursday at home in non-league action.

“Travis Boggs dominated Sweet Home on the mound to get the win,” said Coach Matt Matuszak.

Boggs pitched all seven innings and struck out 13 Huskies, allowing only one hit to lead Elmira to a 9-1 win.

Elmira scored two runs in the first inning to take the lead. Elmira scored four in the sixth to take a 9-0 lead.

Nate Melcher scored the only Husky run in the seventh inning. Colton Holly had the Huskies only hit.

Cory Hanks was the losing pitcher, going five innings. He struck out six batters and gave up two walks and five hits. Gavin Kauffman pitched an inning in relief, giving up three hits and two walks. Drayson Scott saw brief action, giving up a walk and a hit.

The loss leaves the Huskies 1-1 in league and 4-3 overall.

“Sweet Home played nearly perfect baseball today,” Matuszak said.

Scott Hanks and Justin Rice combining for a one-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking two.

The Huskies didn’t commit any errors and struck out only once.

They got things going quickly, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Kauffman led at bats, going 2-2 with two runs, a double, an RBI and two stolen bases.

Scott went 2-3 with an RBI. Justin Rice went 1-2 with a stolen base. Hanks, Isaiah Blake and Kyle Winslow went 1-3. Winslow scored a run, and Blake had two RBIs. Austin Mizsei stole one base.

Scott started and received the win, striking out one and walking two. Justin Rice pitched three innings, striking out seven batters, giving up one hit.

Hanks went 4-4 with a double, two RBIs and three stolen bases to lead the way to a 14-4 win for the Huskies in their league opener, winning under the 10-run rule.

Colton Holly got the win on the mound, and Kyle Winslow added three RBIs.

Holly started on the mound, striking out eight batters, walking one and giving up three hits, including a homerun, in five innings. Scott threw the final inning.

At bats, Winslow went 2-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Mizsei went 1-3, with two runs. Nate Melcher had no hits but scored a run and stole one base. Kauffman had no hits, but scored three runs, with an RBI and two stolen bases. Rice went 1-3.
