Sweet Home’s boys had a big day at Woodburn Wednesday, April 2, as the Huskies won the team track and field competition over the hosts and Stayton, and turned in a raft of personal bests.
The girls didn’t do badly either, despite having only three first-place finishes to 10 for Stayton, the Huskies finished with 63.5 points, behind Stayton’s 74.5.
The boys won the team competition, nearly doubling second-place Stayton’s points, 84-44, with Woodburn right behind (43).
Winners for the boys were Nick Larson in the 300 hurdles, the boys 4×400 relay team of Chase Cameron, Kasey Kast, Kolton Wilmarth, Ryker Burr (3:40.91) – the boys 4×100 relay team ran unopposed, Dylan Sharp in the shot with a PR of 47-10, closely followed by sophomore Gavin Tyler in second with 47-4, Jack Simmons in the javelin (132-0), freshman Sam Barringer in the high jump (5-6) and the triple jump (39-0), junior Elisha Scofield in the pole vault with a personal best of 9-5¼; and sophomore Landon Murry in the long jump with a huge 1½-foot PR of 19-6.
For the girls, freshman Emma Whitton won the 3000 in 11:53.34; junior Loralai Mark won the long jump (14-7), and sophomore Miu Simmons won the triple jump (27-1½).
“We had someone stand out in almost every area,” Head Coach Nathan Whitfield said. “Landon Murry in the long jump, Sam Barringer in the high jump and triple jump, our 4×4 team, Dillan Davis and Kolton Wilmarth in the 200, Chase (Cameron) in the 100, our 4×1– looking awesome. In the shot put, every single kid had a PR or a season’s best.
He noted that Sharp’s and Tyler’s throws of over 47 feet put them in the top 10 in state in the early rankings.
“Elijah Scofield in the pole vault, overcoming some stuff and Nick Larson in the hurdles, he tore it up. The guys absolutely destroyed it out there.
“The girls did good as well,” he added, listing Mark in the jumps, senior Peyton Markell in the javelin and junior McKenzie Miller, who finished second to Stayton’s Haley Buteschoen in the 800 and 1500, running much faster early-season times than she did last year.
“She had great races against a tough opponent,” Whitfield said.
Overall, he said, “they showed up and performed well against a team they didn’t perform well against last year.”
Up next for the Huskies is a trip to Cascade on Wednesday, April 9, followed by the Rob Frank Invitational at Banks.
