It’s clear that the Sweet Home track and field team has some holes to fill, particularly on the girls side.

But the athletes the Huskies had are making progress and Coach Billy Snow was pleased Thursday after Sweet Home visited the 15-team Pleasant Valley Invitational.
“I can say we had a good day,” Snow said. “The kids did well. A lot of JV kids had PR’s.”
Sweet Home showed strength in the javelin and the 3000, as Hannah McClaskey (97-4) and Cassandra Schumacher (11:56.60) won those events on the girls side and freshman Dakotah Keys (157-7) and his brother, senior Jess Keys (10:08.47), won them for the boys.
“Jess ran well,” Snow said. “I was hoping to get him under 10 (minutes) but a win’s a win. In that big of a field (30 runners) that was a good run.”
Snow said Schumacher also ran a little slower than he’d hoped, but “we’re not overly concerned about times right now” because the emphasis is on training and the Husky runners are not in peak condition.
The other individual winner for the Huskies was Brandon Weist, who “attacked the board” in the boys triple jump.
Other Huskies who turned in noteworthy performances included Rob Callagan, who placed third in the 800 in 2:08.6, “a great time and a great run too,” according to Snow, Sam Macklin in the sprints, Nikki Smith and Erika Snow in the pole vaults, Ashley Bertucci and Daniel Mora in the triple jumps, and Ethan Rowe and Bud Daniels, who each PR’d in three events.
The Huskies are missing veteran sprinter Sarah Rosa, who competed in the 100 but is nursing an injury that slowed her midway into the race, and junior Ramiro Santana, who is expected to make an impact in the 400 and 800 and the javelin when he gets past a quadriceps injury.
The team will have to compete again April 5 at Cascade, though some athletes will take part in the Sweet Home Decathlon, which attracts top high school athletes from around the state, on Friday and Saturday.
