Things are looking up for the Sweet Home track and field squad.
After a three-way meet on Thursday, against Estacada and former Capital Conference foe Cascade at Cascade, the Huskies traveled to Junction City Saturday for the Junction City Invitational.
The boys placed fourth, despite some injuries and miscues, in an eight-team field, while the girls were sixth.
“Our kids did well,” Coach Billy Snow said. “We were thin on the girls side but we still took sixth. We had a lot of kids doing events they don’t usually do.”
The meet was unusual in that it used the Wisconsin scoring method, in which every finisher scores. It also limited teams to three entries in each event.
Despite injuries to Leah Dauley and Brandon Weist, which limited their participation, and some scratches and non-finishes in other events, Snow was encouraged by the Huskies’ finishes. Nathan Whitfield scratched three times in the discus and Dakotah Keys false-started in the hurdles, canceling out some sure points in those events.
“We had places we could have picked up points and didn’t,” he said. “All the kids did well.”
Particularly notable performances on the boys side came from Land Florek, who placed second in the 200 and 400, and from Rob Callagan, who ran a negative split to take the lead on the backstretch of the second lap of the 800 and was only edged out at the finish line to place second.
“He’s doing OK,” Snow said. “It’s great to see a sophomore stick his nose in it like that.”
Jess Keys was second in the 1500 and the 3000, and barely missed clearing 6-0 in the high jump to finish second in that event as well, at 5-10.
“He was over, but just barely nicked the bar on the way down,” Snow said.
Marc Callagan was one of those who stepped up to fill open slots for the team, the coach said. Callagan, who usually competes in the throws, volunteered to run the 400 and finished in 58.3.
Freshman Anthony Albright also ran the 400, in 1.00.08, then went to the javelin where he threw
The thin girls sprint squad struggled with the relays, almost stopping on the second and third exchange in the 4×100, but ran 58.7, a time that should improve by a few seconds when the young Huskies get some more practice, Snow said.
Ashley Danielson ran 2:39.36, near her personal record, to finish fifth in the 800, and cracked the 100-foot barrier in the javelin, throwing 100-01.
Cassandra Schumacher posted a personal best in the 1500, in 5:27.22 for fifth, and took third in the 3000 in 11:51.00 on a very windy track.
The wind played havoc with the pole vault, Snow said, blowing vaulters’ poles into the bar on numerous occasions. Newport’s Austin Ouderkirk, who has cleared 15-6 this year to lead the 4A division, was unable to clear a height as Dakotah Keys took second in that event for the Huskies with a leap of 12-0. Keys was the only winner of the day for the Huskies, taking the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.80, good for fourth place in the state 4A division overall standings, and the javelin (165-11).
Newport won the girls event with 835 points, ahead of Junction City (768), and Siuslaw (615). The Junction City boys scored 802 points to win over Siuslaw (717.5) and Newport (669.5).
Sweet Home will host its first meet of the season Thursday, April 12, against Philomath and Stayton.
