Huskies strong in Cascade loss, defeat North Marion

The Sweet Home volleyball team lost to Cascade then defeated North Marion at home last week.

On Oct. 19, the Huskies won their first game against Cascade, the top team in the Capital Conference, 25-18. Cascade won the next three games 25-12, 25-20 and 25-15 to win the match.

“That was the best game we’ve played against a worthy opponent,” Coach Heide Nichol said.

Nicki Emmert set 104-108 with 23 assists, Coach Nichol said. She fed hitting leaders Chelsea Gagner, who went 28-34 with five kills, and Elissa McCartin, who went 24-29 with nine kills. Kari McGuyre added five kills hitting 9-13, and Cait Thireault hit 15-19 with five kills.

“The thing that made this game so successful in my mind was some really good defense by our back row people,” Coach Nichol said. Alisha Basham led with 30 digs, followed by Gagner with 28 digs, Emmert with 15 and McCartin with 13.

“We served at about 93 percent as a team,” Coach Nichol said. “We didn’t have a lot of aces, but you don’t expect it against a team like Cascade.”

Top servers were Thireault, 14-15; Emmert, 13-14; and Gagner and Michelle Cliver, 10-10.

The Huskies also did a good job on serve receive, Coach Nichol said. As a team, the Huskies were at 81 percent. Gagner led in serve receive at 17-19, and Cliver was 14-17.

“For a sophomore, Michelle Cliver has just really stepped up,” Coach Nichol said. “She plays such a mature game, you forget she’s a sophomore.”

The junior varsity defeated Cascade 25-11 and 25-19. The freshmen won 25-178, 19-25, 15-6.

The Huskies defeated North Marion 25-22, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-19 Thursday night.

Emmert set 96-105 with 23 assists.

Ashlee Flanagan showed up with a good performance all around with six blocks, served 8-8 and had three kills.

Thireault served 17-18. Cliver served 20-22.

Basham led digs with 27.

McCartin led hitting with 12 kills, and McGuyre and Gagner added five kills each.

The junior varsity defeated North Marion 25-18 and 25-14. The freshmen won 25-23 and 25-16.

“We should be good for playoffs, but Molalla’s coming back with a bunch of girls that had been ineligible to play,” Coach Nichol said. If Molalla wins all three games, it will tie Sweet Home and force a tie breaker. If Sweet Home adds just one win this week, it will place it in fourth ahead of Molalla; and one of those games is against Molalla. The other is Stayton.

“If we play as well as we did against Cascade against Stayton, we could beat Stayton,” Coach Nichol said. “We could beat Molalla.”

League playoffs most likely will be held this weekend, Coach Nichol said.
