Stayton 13, Sweet Home 11
Stayton chipped away at a strong opening by Sweet Home to win 13-11 in eight innings on Saturday in Sweet Home.
The Huskies boys baseball team built up an 11-4 lead by the end of the fourth quarter, but Stayton brought in three runs in the next inning to spark a rally, scoring runs in each inning through the end of the game. Stayton tied the Huskies in the seventh, but the Huskies were unable to score a run in the bottom of the inning to get the win.
“We hit the ball very well, and Greg Sipe threw a very good game,” Coach Dan Tow said. “Unfortunately, we were a little short-handed in a few areas, and it really showed. We really should have won the game by a wide margin, but some of our young kids struggled catching fly balls and making the plays that you really need to make.
“We squandered a commanding lead and lost a game we should have won easily.
“Despite the disappointing loss, games like this are good experience for our younger players. Some of them make some good plays, and every time you can play a close game, you take something away from it.”
At bat, Adam Matuszak went 3-3 with a double. Brandon Faulconer went 3-4 with a double. Chaz Davis went 2-3.

“Kyle (Pettit) pitched very well, and we really hit the ball well,” Tow said. “We got a little sloppy late in the game defensively, but otherwise, we played well.
“I thought Chaz (Davis) had a very good game defensively. He’s been doing a great job behind the plate for us.”
