Huskies tie local rival East Linn

East Linn Christian Academy 2

Sweet Home 2

A matchup between East Linn Christian Academy and Sweet Home High School boys soccer teams ended in a 2-2 tie.

The Huskies were down 2-0 at halftime after East Linn scored off a breakaway and then again on a rebound from another shot.

“They jumped on us,” Coach Karl Schmidtman said. “We just weren’t passing the ball at all.”

East Linn played better as a team than the Huskies in the first half, but in the second half, the Huskies started pulling their game together.

Heath Belknap “beat two defenders and ended up with a breakaway,” Coach Schmidtman said. The first goal was about 15 minutes into the second half. Belknap was fouled inside the penalty box and scored on a penalty kick.

“We had the momentum the whole time in the second half,” Coach Schmidtman said. “I really thought that we were going to win that game.”

The Huskies had several opportunities to take the lead but didn’t quite make it, he said.

Both teams had nine shots on goal, Coach Schmidtman said. “Both teams played pretty good defense.”

The Huskies hold a 1-1-1 record.

Seaside 7

Sweet Home 1

Luck turned against the Huskies Thursday at home when Seaside defeated them 7-1.

Just about everything that could go wrong went wrong, Coach Schmidtman said. No refs showed up for the game, and it started pouring rain. Belknap and Mark Lewis, key players and co-captains, were out with injuries. Combined, they played for about 20 minutes but both ended up leaving the field.

Seaside scored at about eight minutes into the game. Miguel Angulo scored two minutes later on a breakaway. The game remained tied for another 10 minutes when Seaside scored.

Seaside led 3-1 at half time.

“They’re a good team,” Coach Schmidtman said. “I think on another day, we’d compete with them. I don’t think we’re 7-1 worse than this team. It’s just kind of Murphy’s Law taking effect.”

The Huskies had bright spots in the game, Coach Schmidtman said. “We had a corner kick when we just about scored on a header from Anthony Hoffman.”

The Huskies had been practicing the play and executed it well, Coach Schmidtman said. The ball just missed the goal passing just an inch or so over the cross bar.

Kellen Petersen had 11 saves in the game facing 28 shots by Seaside. The Huskies had eight shots on goal.

The junior varsity lost 6-0 to Seaside.
