Huskies’ times, marks drop at South Albany track

The South Albany Rebel Invitational was Sweet Home’s first time at the event, but it was a good experience for the Husky track and field team, who set a variety of promising personal bests Friday afternoon and evening.

The Husky boys placed third with 108 points, behind West Albany (115.5) and Lebanon (113.5) and ahead of South Albany (101) in the varsity event. The JV boys were second (120) behind West Albany (149).

The girls placed fourth in the varsity competition with 93 points, behind North Eugene (156.5), West Albany (109) and Lebanon (99.5). and ahead of South Albany (60.5).

The JV girls were third (60) behind West Albany (114) and North Eugene (62).

Among the highlight performances were:

– A 10-second PR for freshman Daniel Danforth in the 3000 (9:56.98) while teammate Kyle Hummer ran a 20-second PR (9:58.42) to place second and fourth, respectively, in the race and work their way into the top six times thus far this year in the event.

“I don’t know when was the last time we had two guys run sub-10 in the 3,000,” Coach Billy Snow said of the two, who are both newcomers to the event. Danforth has run the race four times and Hummer, a junior in his first season of track, twice before Friday.

– A 6-foot PR by Taylor Mauch in the boys triple jump, to 38-0, while Keenan Martin, in his first competition in the event, was right behind with a leap of 37-4 1/2. Mauch won the JV event and his jump would have put him fifth if he had competed in the varsity competition.

“I would not be surprised if they go 39 or 40,” Snow said of the two, noting that the district meet is still 10 days away.

– Dakotah Keys pole vaulted 15 feet to win the event, though he was unhappy with his performance, in which he appeared to be bothered by tricky cross winds.

“Even though he was off in the pole vault, he still goes 15 feet,” Snow said. “It’s kind of odd, because 15 feet is a great jump for anybody else.”

– Sophomore Nick Hall ran 51.78 to win the 400 meters, only .14 seconds off his PR, then set a PR of 41.78 in a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles, and wrapped up his day with a 52-second leg as the Huskies won the 4×400 relay in a season’s-best 3:32.73.

“Nick had a great night,” Snow said, noting that Hall has been battling a few injuries recently. “To run that in the 400, then run sub-42 in the 300s, then open up with a 52 flat on that relay leg, that was impressive.”

The boys 4×100 relay team finished second, with Keys running in place of Alex Coakley, clocking 43.76 behind West Albany’s 43.38.

“I feel good about where the relays are right now,” Snow said.

– Sophomore Jake Johnson posted a 15-foot PR in the discus, going 116-7 to place sixth in a deep and talented field.

“Jake is really setting himself up for the future,” Snow said, noting that Johnson “has a great work ethic. The sky’s the limit.”

– Freshman Cassie Johnson placed fourth with a 2-foot PR in the discus, throwing 94-0 in the fourth time she’s competed in the event.

“The discus throwers really came to compete,” Snow said.

Carissa Swanson cut three seconds off her PR in the 800, running 2:34.24. Swanson also won the mile, a rare event in Oregon high school track, in 5:42.28.

Olivia Johnson placed second behind North Eugene’s Katie Peterson in the 3000, Johnson barely missing her own PR in running 11.29.60, three seconds behind Peterson who came into the race seeded 14 seconds faster than Johnson.

“Olivia ran a great race,” Snow said, noting that Johnson has positioned herself among the league’s leaders in the event as districts approach.

Other winners for the Huskies were: Zach Jackson in the javelin (159-08); Jake Comstock in the 110 hurdles, in a season’s best of 15.62; and Annie Whitfield in the javelin (109-4), well off her season’s best of 128-11. Whitfield then ran a half-second PR in the 100 hurdles to finish fifth in 17.68.

“Annie ran a good high hurdles race,” Snow said. “She’s a competitor. She came back from a lousy javelin, even though she won it.”

The Huskies traveled to Molalla Tuesday for a final pre-district meet against the Indians and Cascade. Snow said he planned to go easy on his team, some of whom are under the weather and try some in different events than their usual ones.

“We just have some kids who are sick,” he said. “We have to work them through the next couple of weeks.

“This is our last opportunity to look at some kids and fill some holes.”

The junior varsity track squad will compete in the JV District meet at Cascade Monday.

The Val-Co District Meet will be hosted by Sweet Home starting at 3 p.m. Friday, May 21, and resuming Saturday, May 22, at 11 a.m.
