Game one of doubleheader

The Husky softball team picked up two comfortable wins over Douglas on March 27 at home.

The Huskies beat Douglas 4-1 in the first game.

“Makenzie (Marchanks) threw well again and dominated them,” Coach Steve Hummer said. “We played very strong defense and did not commit any errors. We have turned into a very good defensive ball club, but we need to work on scoring more runs and becoming more consistent at the plate.

“(Idahna) Huenergardt had a big hit in the first after (Michelle) Cliver singled and Marchbanks walked. Idahna hit one to deep left, scoring two. Marchbanks also tripled in the fifth, knocking in Cliver.

“The two runs in the first really gave us a lift and allowed us to play defense with confidence. I was pleased how we jumped on them early.

“We need to learn to maintain our intensity, I felt like there were times when we could have picked up more runs but lacked concentration either on the base paths or at the plate.

“This was a good win for us, we have now played four different teams this year and all them were state playoff teams last year.”

Marchbanks pitched the whole game, striking out 11 batters, walking two and giving up three hits and a run.

At bat, Cliver went 1-2. Huenergardt went 1-3 with a triple and RBI. Marchbanks went 1-3 with a triple and RBI.

Game two of doubleheader

The Huskies topped Douglas 5-3 in their second game.

“We jumped all over them early in the second game with five hits in the first inning.,” Hummer said. “The big hit came from Sara Brocard, a triple knocking in two runs. It was nice to see Sara get her bat going today. She has been struggling, and she really needed a good day. Sara is a tremendous competitor and a great young lady. It was so nice to see her get on track today.

“We were able to get some young girls into the game like (Lacey) Mink, (Kim) Bell, (Chelsea) Gregory and (Frankie) Tagle. Mink and Gregory collected their first varsity hits, and all the JV girls contributed in the win.

“As a team we lost intensity on offense after the big first inning but again played great defense. We will be working hard in the coming weeks on becoming more consistant at the plate and on the base paths.

“Defensively I am very pleased. Marchbanks pitched well again. She was a little tired at times but is just a great competitor.

“Chelsea got into the game in the fifth to make her varsity debut. She pitched very well at times but was a little inconsistant. I really enjoyed watching her compete though. She seems to have the abiltity to really reach down and make things happen when she needs to.”

Marchbanks pitched four innings, striking out six batters, walking two and giving up two hits. She was credited with the win, making her record 4-1. Gregory pitched three innings, striking out five, walking five and giving up three hits and three runs.

At bat, Nicki Aerni went 2-4 with a double. Cliver went 2-4 with a double and RBI. Marchbanks went 1-2. Chelsea Gregory went 1-1. Lacey Mink went 1-2. Sara Brocard went 1-3 with a triple and two RBI.
