Huskies track athletes have field day at Lebanon invitational

Lebanon’s Rob Allen Twilight Invitational provided some great opportunities for Sweet Home’s track and field athletes Friday, May 1 to face competition from some bigger schools.

They took advantage of them.

The Huskies, facing off against several teams from higher OSAA classifications as well as 4A powerhouse Newport, posted 13 personal bests on the boys side and 11 for the girls.

“The guys had a great night,” Coach Billy Snow said. “The girls did too.”

There were some big performances.

Junior Egan Shamek busted a 15-inch personal best in the long jump (21-9), the state’s leading mark as of Monday in the 4A division, then followed that with a similar PR in the triple jump (40-0). Then sophomore Wes Parker followed up with a massive three-foot PR, jumping 39-0¼.

“Egan had a great night,” Snow said. “It wasn’t a fluke because he went 21-8 right before that. Then he comes back 40 feet in the triple. Not to be outdone, Wes got three feet.”

Other big performances came from Garrett Fox, who posted a 10-second best in the 1500 (4:53.56) and the boys 4×100 relay team of Shamek, Eric Flierl, Matt Davis and Trey Reed, which cut its time by half a second to 45.13.

Reed, a sophomore, also posted a personal best of nearly a second in the 400, running 51.83.

The girls 4×100 relay team of Josie Knight, Sarah Dunkley, India Porter and Bethany Gingerich did even better, chopping another second off their season’s best to 52.08.

“I don’t know how they’re doing it,” Snow said. “When you look at it, they don’t have a true sprinter in that group. But they keep taking off more time.”

In the 3000, Allison Wickline and Kanon Nakamura posted 40-second PRs, and Jessica Stockman ran 2:45.55 for a personal best in the 800.

“Jessica just took off and kept going,” Snow said.

Freshman Bethany Gingerich continued to shine in the 400, shaving another second off in finishing in 61.46. Gingerich has run four 400s this year and every race has been faster than the previous ones.

“She’s so deceiving in her stride,” Snow said. “She looks like she’s behind, then suddenly she’s right there.”

Eleanor Hewitt had a big night, posting a 2½-foot PR (28-1½) in the shot and a 10-foot personal best in discus (86-6).

Both of the Huskies’ 300 hurdles runners, Porter and freshman Cora McKee, ran season’s bests in that race, McKee cutting her lifetime best by three seconds to finish in 52.81, a step behind Porter (52.69).

“They both ran races that weren’t perfect,” Snow said. “They can get better.”

Also having a big night was East Linn Christian Academy’s Sydney Nichol, a Sweet Home resident, who set a 19-second PR in the 3000 (10:54.37) to win and break her own school record.

The Huskies sent their junior varsity athletes to Cottage Grove Thursday, April 30, and Snow said some of them did well enough to get consideration for the varsity district meet beginning May 14 in Junction City. The Sky-Em Junior Varsity district meet is Tuesday, May 5, in Sutherlin.

Sweet Home will wrap up its pre-district season Wednesday, May 6, at home with the Last Chance Meet, beginning at 4 p.m. Schools scheduled to participate include 1A Division Falls City, North Clackamas Christian, Oregon School for the Deaf, Triangle Lake and Willamette Valley Christian; 2A Division Perrydale and Oakland, and 4A rival Cascade.

Also, as of Monday, nine athletes were scheduled to compete Friday, May 8, at the Wally Ciochetti Invitational in Cottage Grove.
