Brian Seward slipped right into form Friday, quarterbacking his first varsity game to a win, as the Huskies toppled non-league Toledo 40-8 in Sweet Home.
Seward was aided by a talented offensive line that comes into the season with considerable varsity experience.
The combination proved deadly for the Boomers, even though Toledo was the first to put points on the board.
“It was a typical first game,” Coach Rob Younger said. “We saw things we liked and we saw things we need to work on.”
Sweet Home stiffened up after Toledo’s early tally and came back to score six in the first, 14 in the second and 12 in the third for the 40 point outing. Toledo did not score again until late in the game, adding two touchdowns, one an 80-yarder.
The Huskies dominated the ground game, as 11 backs rushed 43 times for 381 yards. Seward connected three out of five times for 48 yards. Overall, the Huskies had a 425 yard opener.
Toledo backs carried 34 times for 212 yards and their quarterback completed 8 of 16 passes for 107 yards. Toledo’s total offensive drive was 319 yards.
Individually for Sweet Home, senior back Levi McCubbins and Ricky Stock ground up the yardage stats. McCubbins rushed for 110 yards on 16 carries while Stock added 91 yards on six carries.
Seward added 57 yards on two runs and Troy Scott chalked up 48 yards on four carries.
Wunker kicked three extra points for the Huskies.
Toledo’s scores were by Liberatore, two and 26 yard passes and an 80 yard run.
Sweet Home’s scores included: Seward, two yard run, twice; Stock, eight yard run; Scott, 10 yard run; McCubbins, four yard run; and Workman, two yard run.
Opening the holes for them were Josh Starha, Matt Miner, Matt Vassar, Daniel Brewer, Bobby Cartwright and Kylan Walker.
