Huskies turn in some bright performances in two track meets

Three meets into their season the young Huskies are still developing their track and field teams, but there’s a lot of promise, says Coach Billy Snow.

Sweet Home hosted a Sisters squad depleted by spring vacation, and Elmira, on Thursday, April 2, then got a taste of some of the better competition in the 4A and lower divisions Saturday at the Junction City Invitational, which included 12 teams.

Though the Huskies placed fourth on both the girls and boys sides, Snow said he saw a lot of encouraging performances.

The Elmira boys won nine of the 17 events at Saturday’s meet in a 12-team field, demonstrating that preseason prognostications that the Falcons were the team to beat were well-founded.

Sweet Home had individual winners in the 800, won by Jakob Hiett in a state-leading 1:59.98, and the triple jump, won by Egan Shamek (38-9), whom Snow allowed only four jumps between the triple and the long jump to preserve his athlete against injury.

Shamek was second in the long jump by half an inch to Josh Chesnut of Seaside, who went 20-11½.

“I don’t know if he could have caught him, but I told him ‘you have four jumps – decide how you want to split them,’” Snow said.

In the shot, sophomore Andre Holmes and seniors Brycen Mitten and Shawn Worthen finished 4-5-6 in a field of 34 athletes, all 43 feet or over.

“Those three guys are right there together,” Snow said. “I hope they keep moving up together. It would be nice to get all those guys to 45, 46 feet by the end of the season. We’ll see what happens.”

The Sweet Home boys finished second in the short relay, half a second behind Seaside at 45.94, and third in the 4×400.

“I think the boys long relay can drop six, seven seconds by the end of the season,” Snow said.

He said another athlete who is turning heads is sophomore Wesley Parker, who was eighth in the 200 at 25.36 and placed fourth in the jump at 36-7.

“He’s way ahead of where he was last year,” Snow said. “He’s getting there.”

On the girls side, one bright spot was sophomore Natasha Rasmussen, who finished third in the long jump at 15-9.

“That’s pretty impressive for someone who hasn’t practiced it all,” Snow said. “At our level, that’s a dang good jump.”

He said sophomore Gracie Olson is making big strides in the triple jump, adding a foot or more to her personal best for the third meet in a row to go 27-3½.

“She’s a hard worker. She’s just been doing base work,” he said.

Freshman Bethany Gingerich ran a league-leading 1:04.68 in the 400 to finish third.

“That was a good 400 time,” Snow said. “Coming down that last 100 she was really picking people off.”

He said coaches are still trying athletes out, figuring how to structure the team to get the most out of the Huskies.

“We’re still looking around,” Snow said. “We’re encouraged by what we’re seeing. The kids are working.”

Sweet Home travels to Elmira Thursday for a 4 p.m. meet with the Falcons and Cottage Grove, then athletes who have qualified for the Meet of Champions will compete Saturday at Willamette University beginning at 11:30 a.m.
