Sweet Home’s boys and girls both won the team competitions against league rivals Cascade and North Marion Wednesday, April 16, at Cascade.
Then, on Saturday, the Huskies sent some of their top performers to Banks, where they competed in the 16-team Bob Frank Invitational, which included many schools from Northwest Oregon that Sweet Home rarely sees on the track.
“They were smaller schools, the teams that we faced, but they had a lot of good individuals,” Head Coach Nathan Whitfield said of the Banks meet. “We did really well, placing in the top five in a lot of events, and winning at least three of them.”
Track at Cascade
It was an unusual day Wednesday at the Cougars’ track facility – the wind was blowing minimally at best, and the Huskies took advantage.
Sophomore Nick Larson delivered a personal best of more than a foot in the Pole Vault, continuing a sequence of PRs that have raised his best heights from 8 feet at the beginning of the season to 10 feet at Cascade.
The boys 4×400 relay team of Ryker Burr, Kasey Kast, Kolton Wilmarth and Dillan Davis delivered a big season’s best of 3:38.57; and newcomer Wilmarth, a senior in his first year of track, won the 200 (23.29) and the 400 (52.47), both PRs.
Other winners for the Husky boys at Cascade were Larson in the 300 hurdles (45.99); Dylan Sharpe in the shot with a PR of 48-5; Jack Simmons, another senior “rookie” in the javelin with a personal best of 136-2; freshman Mason Tyler with a PR of 17-6 in the long jump, and freshman Sam Barringer in the triple jump.
For the girls, junior McKenzie Miller won the 800 in a personal-best 2:34.29 and freshman Emma Whitton was first in the 1500 (5:26.81); Delainie Pratt won the 100 hurdles (19.70) and tied for first in the pole vault (6-0); and Loralai Mark won the long jump (14-6¼).
Comprehensive team scoring was not available for the Cascade meet, but the Huskies defeated all three opponents head-to-head on both sides.
Track at Banks
Banks was a big day for some Sweet Home athletes, many of whom continued to improve their times and marks.
“Delainie Pratt had a great day and Brooke Elder had a great day and Jack Simmons had a big PR and so did Ean Tackett,” Whitfield said. “McKenzie (Miller) and Emma both did great in the 1500 and the 3000. Riker and Kasey (Kast) both looked good in the 800.”
The Huskies got wins from Wilmarth in the 400, Sharp in the shot and Simmons in the javelin, who posted a 10-foot PR of 146-1 to win that event, and freshman Tackett added 12 feet to the personal best he’d thrown three days earlier at Cascade, with an effort of 121-11, which moved him into eighth place in the OWC standings (Simmons is second).
In the 800, sophomore Ryker Burr continued to improve with a PR of 2:09.49, and freshmen Kace Stevens (4:57.41) and Louis Kistner (5:05.98) both finished the 1500 with personal bests.
Sophomore Landon Murry had a PR of 12.12 in the 100, then followed that up with another in the long jump, going 19-10¾. Tyler also PR’d, with 17-6¾. In the triple jump, freshman Sam Barringer turned in a personal best of 39-1.
For the girls, sophomore Brooke Elder posted PR’s in both the 100 (13.49) and the 200 (28.40) and sophomore Noel Helfrich ran a 17-second PR in the 800 to finish in 2:40.97. Sophomore Jayla Moore, in her first year of high school track, also PR’d in both events, running 14.55 and 30.21.
In the 1500, Whitton cut nine seconds off her previous high school best to finish in 5:17.64, then set a six-second PR in the 3000, running 11:47.79 despite having problems with her shoes.
Pratt had a big day, with a PR of 7-6 in the high jump and a season’s-best 19.47 in the 100 hurdles. In the 300 hurdles, freshman Grace Gardner cut nearly two seconds off her best time with a 47.65.
Mark had PR of 4-2 in the high jump, after running a personal best of 13.82 in the 100, and Sophia Stock also posted a personal best of 4-0 to go with a PR of 1:11.84 in the 400. In the triple jump, senior Beatrice Reeve had a personal best of 28-1½.
Emerson Martineau had a personal best of 86-7 in the discus and freshman Bailey Newens posted a 6-foot PR, throwing 73-1.
Next up for the Huskies is a meet with Stayton at North Marion on Wednesday, April 16, followed by a home meet against Cascade and North Marion on April 22.
