The Husky boy’s basketball team dodged a third overtime show Saturday at Gladstone on Saturday when Colton Emmert put three points on the board on a buzzer shot to win 46-43.
“It was close the whole way,” Coach Tim Little said. Gladstone ran a 2-3 and 1-2-2 zone, the first time the Huskies have seen them this year. They handled the defense all right, but on the other end of the court, they had some difficulty getting stops on Gladstone.
The Huskies trailed 19-18 at halftime and then led 32-30 at the end of the third quarter.
Tied at 43 at the end of the game, “we ran a special,” Little said. “It didn’t quite work very well. Colton Emmert heaved a 22-footer and it fell in (beating the buzzer).”
Gabe Kauffman led scoring with 13 points. Brandon Weist added 12; Kyle Carter, eight; Emmert, seven; and Ricky Worley, Ryan Graville and Nathan Whitfield, two each. Josh Riggs, Dustin Hay and Ray Lingenfelter played but did not score.
Sisters canceled its appearance in Sweet Home on Friday due to weather.
On Dec. 12, the Huskies lost to Marist 63-58 in overtime.
Sweet Home led Marist 13-8 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 22-21 at halftime.
“We were down 10 in the third quarter,” Little said. “But we came back within four.”
The Huskies trailed 38-34 at the end of the third.
“Colton had a great game in the fourth quarter and overtime,” Little said. He scored 13 of his 19 points in the fourth and overtime, leading the effort to tie the game at 51 and force an overtime.
A junior, “he has no problem taking the pressure off the kids offensively,” Little said.
Emmert led scoring in the game. Weist added 18; Carter, 12; Kauffman, 8; and Riggs, 1. Worley, Lingenfelter, Graville, Ball and Whitfield played but did not score.
“We had a good week,” Little said. “We’re just trying to keep improving for league.”
The Huskies hold a 3-5 record.
“We’re happy,” Little said. “We’re happy. We’re still improving.”
With intensity and focus, he thinks, the Huskies will be competive.
The Huskies next attend a tournament at Cascade on Dec. 27 and Dec. 28. Their next regular game is at home against Cottage Grove on Dec. 29.
