Newport 12, Sweet Home 0
The Husky baseball team won two games on the road last week, against Regis and Harrisburg, before losing in a shutout at home to a powerful Newport squad.
Newport defeated the Huskies 12-0 in five innings Monday afternoon between rain and hail showers.
“Newport has a very good team, but we played very poorly, I thought,” Coach Dan Tow said. “They hit a lot of balls just out of our reach, and we didn’t communicate very well on some of them.
“One high point was a catch by Tyler Horner in left field that was one of the best catches I’ve seen in a high school game.
“Our defense wasn’t very impressive tonight. We had a few errors in the infield and a number of other balls we should have gotten to but didn’t.”
At bat, the Huskies reached base a few times on errors, but the Huskies didn’t get a hit, Tow said. Newport collected 12 hits.
J.P. Williams started on the mound. Greg Sipe and Shelby Johnston pitched in relief. Cody Dordan was the winning pitcher.
The Huskies are 6-4.
The junior varsity defeated Newport 13-3 and extended its record to 9-0.

Sweet Home 2, Regis 1
The Huskies defeated Regis 2-1 at Stayton on April 12.
“This was a very well-played defensive game,” Tow said. “We actually hit the ball very well, but it was one of those days when most of the balls we hit hard were right at them.
“Fortunately, we scored one more run than they did, and we pulled it out.
“Our defense played well, committing only one error; and Levi (Marchbanks) pitched a great game, striking out seven and walking two while giving up just three hits.”
Lee Miller was the losing pitcher. Silbernagle started for Regis. Heuberger and Miller pitched in relief.
At bat, Sipe and Leif Erickson went 1-2. Brad Valloni went 1-3 with a double and an RBI. Marchbanks went 1-3. Johnston went 1-3. Williams hit a double and scored the winning run. Tanner Erickson, pinch runner, scored a run.
Derek Piete hit a solo homerun for Regis.

Sweet Home 9, Harrisburg 6
Erickson went 3-3 with a grand slam and six RBIs on the day to lead the Huskies to a 9-6 win at Harrisburg on April 11.
“We hit the ball pretty well today and got some big hits when we needed them,” Tow said. “Leif had a huge day at the plate, driving in six of our nine runs. This was a good game with a talented Harrisburg club.
“Our infield did a very nice job defensively. We played well all around the diamond.”
Harrisburg scored the first run in the bottom of the first inning. Sweet Home answered in the second with another run, and Erickson hit his grand slam in the third.
Harrisburg drove in two more runs in the third, another in the fourth and two more in the fifth to lead 6-5. The Huskies scored two more each in the sixth to get ahead and seal the win.
At bat, Johnston went 2-3, and Williams and Tyler Holly each went 2-4.
Richards went 3-3 with two doubles for Harrisburg.
Williams was starting Husky pitcher. Johnston and Sipe pitched in relief. Sipe received credit for the win.
