Huskies wrestle final dual meet; turn focus toward districts

It wasn’t dramatic, but it was fun as Sweet Home’s wrestlers finished their regular season Thursday, Feb. 1, with a 63-15 win over Cottage Grove.

The Huskies honored their seniors, Bryce Coulter, Zak Fox, Justin Kurtz, CJ Mitchell Joey Sell and Ricky Yunke.

In fact every Sweet Home wrestler who was healthy got a match, thanks to a visit by the Thurston JV squad, who faced off with the Huskies before the Cottage Grove dual.

“I’m glad that I got every kid in my program a match that night,” Sweet Home Coach Steve Thorpe said. “Thanks to Coach (Mike) Simons for that. The seniors all got to be under the light. They all wrestled a match they all won.

“It was a good way to finish the year and get ready for regionals and state.”

Thorpe said his team finished the duals season with a 33-4 record.

Now the Huskies are playing for real.

Sweet Home hosts the Special District 2 championships Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9 and 10, which will include Cascade, Cottage Grove, Elmira, Junction City, Newport, North Marion, Philomath/Alsea, Sisters, Stayton, Sutherlin and Yamhill-Carlton/Gaston.

Wrestling starts at noon both Friday and Saturday, with the finals likely early Saturday evening, following the conclusion of the consolation placing matches.

Admission on Friday is $6 per adult for a single session, or $15 for a two-day pass. Students K-12 are $5, with ID required for high school students. Adult admission is $10 Saturday for both sessions or $6 per single session, and $8 for students ($5 for a single session). Only OSAA Gold Cards – no league passes – will be accepted.

The top five finishers in each weight division will qualify for the state tournament, which wil be held Feb. 16-17 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
