Huskies’ wrestling win over Tillamook comes down to final match

As they focused on this week’s District 2 regional meet, Sweet Home’s wrestlers got a good test in a 45-34 win at Tillamook Tuesday, June 8.

“That was a great dual,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “That’s the kind of duals you want to have. When you wrestle someone like Tillamook, it’s a lot like Sweet Home. We’re mirror programs. So it was a fun dual that came down to heavyweight. Exciting.”

Key wins came from Jacob Sieminski at 120, who “showed his dominance,” Thorpe said.

Trenton Smith had a “huge fall” at 138, and Tristan Spencer had a “huge win, a great win” in an 8-3 decision pinned the Cheesemakers’ Parker McKibbin.

“Tucker Weld showed up for us and got a win we were after and Jesse Jamison got another fall. You come down to heavyweight, come down to Colby Gazeley. It was fun.”

Gazeley finished things off with a pin of Tillamook’s Messiah Tuiolemota.

The Huskies will host the boys regional tournament on Thursday, starting at 10 a.m. Each wrestlers gets two tickets and spectators will only be allowed with a ticket.

The top four wrestlers in each division will qualify for state.

“Numbers are down across the state because of the COVID situation,” said Thorpe, who has personally organized much of the culmination events this year. ” Our region is still bigger, with 111 entries. It’s probably one of the toughest regions in the state as well. We’re just going in with the goal of trying to qualify as amny as possible.”

The girls’ regional, which also will qualify four in each division for state, will be held Friday, June 18, at Cottage Grove.
