The Huskiettes finished 10th of 14 teams at the state dance competition held Saturday at the University of Portland Chiles Center.
This year, the team had to dance against all 4A teams, Coach Kristin Ashcraft said.
Last year, they competed in the small division, but the small and large divisions were not used this year under the OSAA’s new classification system.
The Huskiettes are a small team, with 11 dancers, Ashcraft said.
Teams that field 30 dancers have a number of advantages in scoring, creating stiff competition for her small troupe.
Heading into the competition, she had hoped to reach sixth or seventh place considering the tough competition.
“They performed excellently,” she said. “They had a great time.”
Ashcraft said she is proud of her team and praised their hard work throughout the season and at state.
The Huskiettes earned a trophhy at all four of their competitions prior to state, placing fourth, third, second and first respectively.
One of her dancers, Aya Okajima, a senior exchange student from Japan, was named to the all-state dance team.
Ashcraft said she has contacted OSAA asking that dance divisions be divided between large and small, like most competitions.
