Huskiettes finish fourth at state competition

The Sweet Home High School Huskiettes dance team finished fourth at state on March 14 and March 15.

They didn’t bring home a trophy, but they did OK, said Coach Kristin Ashcraft. The 4A small division had five teams total.

“They were really close to third place,” Ashcraft said. “We had really tough competition. Every team was so good.”

First-place finisher Crook County, with 85.31 points, was “awesome,” she said. The second- through fifth-place scores were closer.

Astoria finished second with 71.86 points. Molalla was third at 67.11. Sweet Home had 65.42 points, and Banks had 65.39 points.

The Huskiettes danced to “Perfect” by Pink with the theme “Perfect to Me.”

The Huskiettes work through their routine. From left, they are Shalese Mancuso, Leticia Virgen, Emily Conrad, Crystal Crites, Yoshiko Tomono, Andrea Wilcox, Cathy Cheshire and Laura Mauer.

They’ve done well with it at competitions throughout their season, Ashcraft said. During the first state performance on March 14, they had some precision problems and found themselves in a hole they couldn’t escape the next day.

“The second round was like a thousand times better,” Aschraft said, but the state score is an average of scores from six judges over both performances.

“Overall, I’m proud of them,” Aschraft said. “They pulled it out the second round.”

And they did well all season long, she said. It’s not just about state.

“It’s the whole journey that’s important,” Ashcraft said. “Overall, it was a great season.”

Performing were seniors Emily Conrad, Laura Mauer and Yoshiko Tomono; juniors Crystal Crites, Shalese Mancuso and Karese Mancuso; and sophomores Cathy Cheshire and Leticia Virgen.
