Husky athletes try hand at decathlon, heptathlon

Spring break wasn’t a break at all for Seth Graves and several other Husky track athletes who participated in the Throwers Meet held Thursday and the heptathlon or decathlon held Friday and Saturday.

Graves was entered in both the Throwers Meet and the decathlon, tying for all around male performer as a thrower and placing third in the decathlon while establishing personal bests in several events. Graves’ mark of 4675 not only shattered his own mark of 4086 last year but also placed him fourth on all the all-time Husky list.

In the girls heptathlon, Lisa Brocard, who finished in second place, also set a personal best with her score of 3229, which came up just short of Leah Proctor’s school record of 3315 set in 2000.

Though both events drew fewer participants than previous years, several SHHS athletes rose to the occasion to post high marks. In the Throwers Meet, all three of the girls events were won by Huskies: Krystle Streight in the shot put with a throw of 36-02, Rachel Gaskey in the discus with a 113-01 mark, and Kim Lovik in the javelin at 86-05.

For the boys, Mike Severns continued his success in the javelin with another toss in the 170’s, despite battling an injury. Graves finished third in all three events to earn his share of the all- around award.

The entire track team returns to action with a dual meet at Pleasant Hill starting at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
