Junction City 7, 7
The Huskies split a doubleheader at home Saturday with Junction City.
The Huskies lost the first game 7-1 but followed up with a 9-7 win.
In the first game, “Brent Smith pitched very well, going four innings,” Coach Dan Tow said. “Unfortunately, we had some defensive mistakes, and they cost us some unearned runs. We also couldn’t seem to string any of our hits together.”
Junction City scored three in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead and added a run in the fifth and three in the seventh. The Huskies scored a run at the end of the seventh inning but failed to overtake Junction City.
Pitching, Smith struck out four batters and walked two. Bryce Beard pitched in relief.
Hitting, Joe Rosa went 1-2. Chris Phillips, Smith, Donny Cliver, Beard, Brandon Martin and Lance Carter all went 1-3.
Beard scored the Huskies’ one run on an RBI from Smith.
For Junction City, Brian Bodtker hit a solo home run in the seventh. Brett McClintock hit a two-run home run in the seventh.
“We bounced back and played better in the second game,” Coach Tow said. “We had a lot of guys hit the ball well, and we got some good pitching at times.
“Cody Miller had an outstanding catch in right field to steal a base hit from Junction City.
“We got hits from a lot of guys up and down our lineup. I was proud of the kids for coming back and battling after being a little flat in the first game.”
The Huskies opened up with a 2-1 lead after the first inning. Junction City scored to tie the game in the second, but the Huskies responded with two more runs in the third to take a 4-2 lead, a lead they would hold through the game.
The Huskies added four in the fifth and one in the sixth to seal the win against Junction City, which scored one more in the fifth with a four-run rally in the seventh.
Cliver was the winning pitcher with one strikeout and four walks. Cody Miller and Smith pitched in relief.
Hitting, Phillips went 2-3 with two runs and an RBI. Cliver went 2-3 with one run. Rosa went 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Martin went 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Carey Hintze went 1-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Beard went 1-3 with two runs and an RBI. Carter went 1-2.
