Sweet Home’s boys and girls both were team winners in the Stayton Invitiational swim meet Thursday, Dec. 30.
The girls scored 116 points behind seven first-place finishes, ahead of Stayton (100), Cascade (55) and Jefferson (16).
The boys won all 11 of their events, finishing with 185 points to Stayton’s 43, Cascade’s 29 and Jefferson’s 4 points.
The meet, which is held in Stayton’s metric pool – all the other pools on the Huskies’ schedule are 25-yard pools – gave Sweet Home a chance to break up two weeks of “intense” practice over Christmas break, Coach Doug Peargin said.
Individual winners for the Husky girls were Sami Webb in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly and Naomi Gunselman in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
Winners for the boys were Derek Jaques in the 200 freestyle, Zac Pearce in the 50 and 400 freestyles, Gravy Gunselman in the 100 butterfly, Alex Stupin in the 100 freestyle, Bryce Roberts in the 100 backstroke and Cory Martin in the 100 breaststroke.
“We’re pretty much where I think we should be for this time of the year,” said Peargin, whose boys are 12-0 and girls are 11-1 on the season. “With only seven weeks left before districts we need to start focusing on what’s ahead.”
Sweet Home is hosting Woodburn and Junction City on Tuesday, Jan. 4, and Central on Friday, Jan. 7. Both meets will start at 4 p.m.
