Sweet Home opened its 2011-12 swimming season Friday, Dec. 2, with a win over Blanchet Catholic and Cascade by the boys and a second-place finish by the girls.
The Huskies were missing their top swimmers, who were competing in Corvallis, but Coach Doug Peargin said the girls’ finish revealed Sweet Home’s lack of depth this year.
“Both teams swam well but our girls got hurt by their lack of depth.”
The bright side, Peargin said, was that Sweet Home’s returnees are swimming faster than they were last year at this time.
“We had several PRs (personal bests) and that’s unusual for so early in the season,” he said.
The boys scored 122 points to 78 for Blachet and 44 for Cascade. Individual winners for the boys were Victor Stupin in the 200 Freestyle (2:10.00), Elric Benson in the 50 Butterfly (30.19), Jake Johnson in the 100 Freestyle (59.13) and Cory Martin in the 50 Breaststroke (34.15). Sweet Home also won all three relays.
Blanchet, which had twice the number of swimmers as Sweet Home’s girls, won the girls team competition with 129 points, to 87 for Sweet Home and 81 for Cascade. Individual winners for the girls were Emily Thompson in the 100 Individual Medley (1:16.39) and the 50 Breaststroke (39.91) and Kimber Swanson in the 100 Freestyle (1:05.50). The Huskies also won the 200 Freestyle Relay.
“We swam a lot of kids in some events that they weren’t used to swimming,” Peargin said. “This helps us later on when I’m setting up a meet and working on relays.
“Except for lack of depth, I think we’ll give a lot of teams a lot of trouble.”
