Sweet Home’s female golfers opened their season with a nine-hole match at Arrowhead Country Club March 17.
Seniors Lisa Wiens and Abby Knight led the Huskies to a third place finish, shooting 57s to tie for seventh place individually.
Molalla won the outing with a score of 212, Blanchet was second at 255, Sweet Home shot a combined 261 and Stayton was fourth with a 273.
Elyse Ellingboe shot a solid 61 to finish as the third low scorer for the tournament.
C. Ferlan of Molalla was the meet medalist with a 47. Sweet Home scores were: Knight, 57; Wiens, 57; Ellingboe, 61; Moser, 86; VanEpps, 95.
“The team score is much higher than it will be later on in the season as senior three year letter winner Oakley Tyler was unable to play due to illness,” Coach Tom Horn said. “Our number one player, Chelsea Gagner, was at the state dance competition. With the addition of these players, look for a 30-40 stroke difference.”
Coach Horn said his girls felt good about their play and are looking forward to competing with Molalla and Sisters.
Sam Waller and Sean McGuyre shot 87s to tied for second low scores as Sweet Home golfers defeated Cascade and Toledo March 28 at Mallard Creek.
The Huskies shot a combined 382 to Cascade’s 389 and Toledo’s 392.
Waller shot a 49-38-87 and McGuyre a 43-44-87 for the day. Ryan Elliott shot a 49-52-101 and Neil VanEpps a 54-53-107 for the day.
Coach Horn said the opening outing was a cold and windy day.
“Same rebounded from a disastrous opening front nine 49 with a two over par 38 on the backside,” Coach Horn said. “His game was highlighted by three birdies and McGuyre’s round included six par one holes and a birdie.”
Coach Horn said VanEpps and Elliott struggled with the windy conditions.
“Both are much more capable of scoring lower and I’m sure they will as the season progresses,” Coach Horn said.
