Sweet Home freshman Dakotah Keys didn’t win the annual Sweet Home Decathlon Saturday, but he set a school record in the event for second place in a field of 20 athletes, including some of the state’s top track and field competitors.

Seniors Chase Dalton of Tigard and Emily Holding of Damascus Christian were the winners at the annual Sweet Home Decathlon and Heptathlon, held Friday and Saturday at Husky Field.

Dalton scored 6526 points in the decathlon, which is composed of 10 events in which athletes-points increase with their performances. Keys scored 5869 points to break the record 5302 set by Aaron Watts in 1989. Kevin Godfrey of Douglas was third, with 5780.

Holding, who the 1A state title in the 100, 200 and 100 hurdles last year, scored 3778 points in winning or placing second in all but one of the seven events in the heptathlon. Dominique Jacoy of Portland Lutheran was second with 3410 and Brittany Weber of South Albany plaed third with 2572. No Sweet Home athletes participated this year in the heptathlon.

Marc Callagan was the second-highest Sweet Home placer, taking 11th with 3938 points, to edge his twin brother Rob Callagan, who placed 12th with 3920.

Coach Billy Snow said the eight Sweet Home athletes did well, especially since some of them were trying events for the first time. He said those who competed last year “were well above last year in terms of total points.”

Keys scored 4549 last year as an eighth-grader.

Keys and KC Hanscam both scored personal bests in the pole vault, Keys and Godfrey tying for first at 12-6 after Kennedy’s John Ellingson, who normally starts at 14-6 and has cleared 15-7, failed to clear a height. Hanscam cleared 11-0.

Keys placed second in the javelin with a high school PR of 164-8, which puts him fourth in the state 4A standings, behind Dalton’s 191-9, which is one of the top throws in the state as a whole thus far this year. Dalton, who plans to attend Brigham Young University on a track scholarship, placed second in the state last year in the 4A boys state javelin competition.

Keys and Marc Callagan also posted personal bests in the discus Keys placing third with a throw of 114-1 and Callagan throwing 106-11.

“Marc’s got a lot left in him,” Snow said of the sophomore, who, he said, will throw farther once he gets his footwork down in the discus ring.

Rob Callagan won the 1500, the final event in 4:44.5, ahead of Keys, who ran 4:47.8 for second.

The Huskies will be back on the track Thursday at Cascade followed by a meet Saturday at Junction City in which they will be able to enter three athletes per event.

“We’re going to have some people doing some things they don’t normally do just to score some points,” Snow said of the Junction City meet.

He said he hopes to have injured middle-distance and long-sprints runner Ramiro Santana back on the track soon, along with a newcomer to the team, Terran Burgess, who he said may be able to help the Huskies in the shorter distances.
