Sweet Home’s girls golf team took fourth in its last regular-season tournament, scoring a respectable 474, the Huskies’ second-best score of the season, at Mallard Creek Wednesday, May 3.
Chelsea Gagner, who has led the Huskies and the league for most of the season, was ill, but still managed to shoot an 89, good for second place in the individual standings, just two strokes behind the winner.
Sara Tyler (121) and Ella Butler (129) both had season- and career-low scores, which, bodes well for their chances at the district meet, which started Monday at Santiam Golf Club in Stayton, Coach Tom Horn said.
Elyse Ellingboe (116) got off to a great start with a birdie on the tough first hole, a 320-yard par 4.
Newport won the team competition, shooting 396, followed by Toledo (434), Stayton (473), Sweet Home (474) and Cottage Grove (487).
“I like our chances to play really well at the district tournament,” Horn said, noting that only a few strokes separate the top four teams.
“The league is wide open, with only Molalla playing consistently better than the other schools. Anything can happen this year.”
“Chelsea is the favorite to win the league crown as an individual. If things fall into place for Elyse, she could also place high and possibly qualify for the state tournament.”
The boys also competed in the district meet Monday and Tuesday, at Arrowhead Golf Course in Molalla.
Results for both the girls and boys districts were not available at press time and will be reported next week.
